Bristol Cityâs class of 2014 will attempt to make history when they take on League One rivals Bradford at Ashton Gate on Tuesday. Unbeaten in their opening 13 games in the third tier, Steve Cotterillâs table-topping Robins have now equalled a remarkable club record set way back in 1954. Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and food rationing had only just ended when City last made a 13-game unbeaten start to the campaign. But anything other than defeat against the Bantams will see this City team eclipse the mark set by the promotion-winning side of 60 years ago. Although the superstitious Cotterill will not thank me for saying so, the omens are certainly good for City. Also playing in the third tier, the 1954/55 side won the Division Three South title at a canter, finishing nine points clear of Leyton Orient and establishing a club record of 31 wins in a season. It is still too early to be talking about automatic promotion, but the points they have already put on the board and the calibre of the players signed during the summer recess mean Cotterill and his charges are in a really good place right now. Of course, Cityâs rise to the top of League One has been no flash in the pan â a record of just one defeat in 13 outings at the end of last season suggested the good times were returning. Well if it means that we'll break a record then no we wont Even though this season has been great I still have that negative side to me thanks to what we've been through in the last 4 years. I'd love us to beat it as is my short Bristol city life I would have seen our all time appearances holder and the best EVER start to a season hopefully followed by winning the league, and i think that's something we haven't ever done?
Hopefully tomorrow at 22.00 we'll have another 3 points on the board, but a draw would also break the record from the start of a season.
We could do with Peterborough, Swindon and Preston slipping up but we're all at the top for a reason. When you're at the bottom it's easier to gain points between yourselves and the team below as it's more likely they'll lose. When you're at the top it's a constant battle to move clear. A win on Tuesday is a must, a defeat or draw lets P'boro move closer to OUR top spot!
Just think how the Gate would be sounding if we had all 4 stands open at this time......been a while since we played at "Fortress" Ashton Gate!
Records are meant to be broken and if the footballing gods dictate these things then we will be O.K. and yet there always has to be an element of doubt when, to use shiny's words, we haven't exactly set the world on fire with our exploits over the last 4-5 years. Been around to see a few records broken and if my slipping memory serves me correctly I saw Arthur Rowley of Shrewsbury break the all time scoring record at Millwall in the mid sixties. Now I will second guess myself but thank heaven for search engines.
we now only need to average .65 points a game to avoid relegation................. lol however should we be unlucky and average 1.8 points a game we could get promoted!
