Obviously I use them, but they do seem to have a knack of dividing or entrenching, rather than uniting opinions. For me, this runs the risk of adding paranoia to the matchday experience as some will be frightened of global ridicule or being unclear of what's acceptable and expected of a "proper" football fan. I think it also leaves some people with an inflated impression of their punditry skills and football knowledge.
I don't have the option of discussing city down the pub or at work. For exhiles like me the forum is vital. I do find some posters far more interesting than others. I can't post about who played as centre forward in the 1934 season thriller. But I have learnt more from places like 606, HDM and here than I expected.
They are terrible things. Full of. Mad/angry paranoid funny lunatics with drink problems!! I daren't imagine how ****ed up. The people are who moderate them!!
i think message boards are great on the whole but find myself getting irritated by posters who are more concerned with undermining the views of others than putting their own points/opinions over. that's where the divide comes from. end of the day its just bluster and one upmanship. i'm no message board pu$$y but some really need to learn that just because an opinion is different, that doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong.
I think part of the issue there is that people use the boards for different primary reasons. There are some, and they amuse me, that will post very rarely and then only to grumble at none football threads interrupting their reading. There are some who want to show they're better than professional pundits and then there are others who just like bashing words about. If the different types meet on a thread, it can lead to interesting contrasts or more often (as in ones I stupidly fall into) dull drawn out pedantry. Edit... I just re-read that and realised I missed the bulk of board users who are just normal well adjusted people keen on socialising.
Apart from the more aggressive rude posters & the idiots who talk ****e, I like the message boards, it's good to keep up with all the info of the day & as I travel a lot it's good to find out how we played & who's good & bad, new players, how they settle in, what to look forward to next time I go to a game.
I think message boards are irrelevant in the main. They encompass such a minority of the football supporting population that they generally have no influence on anything. This doesn't detract from how much fun or information the users of forums get from them though, even if there are a large amount of keyboard warriors who have overly inflated opinions of how important they are in the big scheme of things. Twitter, for instance, has far more social impact on the footballing world than any forum I can think of.
The reason i use this board is a no brainer really. I'm a City fan,and i get to keep up with everything City. I'm very appreciative of everyone on here who posts news from other boards or media,as it means i don't have to trawl the net myself. It's like having loads of football spies all over the place, working for me. If something of interest to me is on Sky,BBC or in whichever paper, you can guarantee that someone will tell me about it,or post a link. Then of course there's the fact i can air my own views and hear those of others of like mind. It was quite funny really, when i first started using this board,i'd go to work next day and have all the latest City news. It wasn't long before anyone who wanted to know what was going on would automatically come to me. It was especialy cool when the likes Olm or Premier Tiger passed on insider knowledge, and i became the "man in the know" for my workplace. I am aware this doesn't really answer your'e question Dutch, but i thought this was as good a place as any to say it. Fellow Not606 posters "i salute you"
I think there good overall apart from the odd idiot, it is a good way of reading what other people think and sometimes i like to go on other message boards not to put anything on them but to read them and you get an opinion of what the opposing fans think of us ect. Sometimes has well you get to read about there own players, who is good, who is injured ect. I do enjoy on our own boards the speculation of signings and general views on players/games ect mind you if i was a player and was playing rubbish i don't think i would be reading them.
As long as you don't take them too seriously and don't let them become an addiction (I visit some non-football sites where posters rack up an incredible number of posts) then they're fine. Just a bit of fun my eyes.
i like this one just because its the easiest place to find out everything thats going on , cant be arsed to listen to Radio Humberside and trawl all the football transfer sites, so i just let others do it and feed off there information.... i also liked it when we had "insiders" who knew the team on the friday before the game, then i could impress my friends who didnt come on here by always guessing the correct line up
I like MelU am an exile, and as he says you can't go down the pub to debate all things Hull City, so this forum allows me to catch up with news, have a bit of banter with others, and generally discuss a topic I am passionate about. Without it I would have to start going and watching Aberdeen again, which I did for a while, but found that an English accent was a magnet for someone to have a pop at you, so I gave up.
Can't deny i enjoyed that, even better when you could predict transfer rumours before anyone else. Now one of my mates comes on here so i don't get away with it these days.
I personally come on here for all the updates. We all have different reviews on the game and how we rate each players contribution. I only use this forum, which my wife says I spend far too much time reading.
