They are apparently preparing a bid for Rhodes of £14m, have a modern, forward looking manager, a clear strategic plan and have also signed Downing to add guile to their ranks.

Are they about to become the second biggest team in the North East?

    I think they could be.

    :)

Agreed, although in terms of competition for 2nd place, there isnt any, Sunderland have an interim coach who is leaving at the end of next season, he is also bringing in aged players like Kaboul on big wages, which is weired because he might not be in the new managers plans next season.

In all honesty i really think Sunderland should be looking just not to get relegated. they are in limbo, they cant build for the future without knowing whose going to be in charge. They cant expect him to spend loads of cash on players who might not neccesarily fit into the new managers plans! by that time, Middlesborough could be promoted and have a half decent squad put together.

Boro really are pushing the boat out this year and have the potential to be the second biggest over time.
I think the challenge for SAFC will be to maintain their PL status this year and then appoint the right man next Summer.
They simply can't afford another season battling the drop and need stability after so many managers and false dawns over recent years.
Boro have what neither NUFC or SAFC have in that they have an owner who has an emotional connection with the club so they have a distinct advantage on that front IMHO.
It will be interesting to see if Boro can take over SAFC though.

Biggest = Size of fanbase and current level of global attention.

So no. Newcastle are the biggest, Sunderland 2nd, Boro 3rd.

Stability!...But the only strategy they have is to replace their manager before every derby <laugh>...thats worked the last 3 seasons mind :headbang:, ...but not exactly good for stability

You are all talking as if it didn't take until the last game to achieve safety.

    History too.

You seem to be classing the biggest as having the best team. The only real way of measuring that is league position. So going by that Boro are currently the 3rd biggest but by the end of the 16/17 season have the potential to be the biggest.

I hate subjective questions like this so I don't know why I even answered it.

Does it really matter Sammy? We are No.1 and I don't really care which of them wins the fight over the scraps.

This looks about right to me. Though I think the Falcons, Diamonds and Eagles could easily switch sport and still sort the mackems out. With our new top 8 team (it might CL by the time the window closes) we will smash them this year...
