What was it supposed to be, a minutes applause or a minutes silence? I thought a minuted silence, then everyone started clapping?
I came in from work during the HT interval. What was the minutes applause/silence for..? Sharp's tragedy..?
It was meant to be a silence, obviously some people thought it was an applause and started clapping, so most followed suit. However, I did a minutes silence
The majority of people thought he blew the whistle and went quiet to observe the minutes silence and then the referee blew again and many fans thought we had finished the minute but then we realised the players were still standing on the centre circle but by that time it was too late so we had to carry on clapping.That's the way i saw it anyway.Poorly organised by the ref.
From what I know, ref blew whistle, then blew again, leading people to think he had whistled for silence, then whistled for a minutes applause to commence.
I think it was due to both sets of fans being so quick to settle, that absolute silence was being observed for a few seconds before the ref blew his whistle. Then everyone was applauding to congratulate themselves for doing so well, until it dawned on them that the silence only lasted for about 10 seconds and so it morphed into a minutes applause. Basically, not the only mistake the ref made tonight, and the Lino didn't cover himself in glory either. Or at least I reckon from my excellent position in the Chapel tonight.
Yes, I think if they should take their flags away, until they know when is the correct time to wave them.
I think a minutes applause is much more effective than a silence, which is usually ruined by noises off, we all knew what it was about, nice to show respect for the departed however you do it.
yeah, but applause also remembers & celebrates their life, i suppose it depends on the circumstance really
Actually, either would have been great. Just a shame that they made a bit of a pigs ear of it and mixed both. Ah well, the fans were great, from both sides. Both silent, or both applauding, they were great.
This! I think the players had to sart clapping for the minutes silence because the referee messed it up... Just to save the ref embarrassment...
A minutes silence is of course the traditional tribute. However, sad a reflection that it is on our society, there are always a few disrespectful pond life who will deliberately interrupt the silence. The minute's applause is an excellent way to counter such scum and, as mentioned above, is a good way to celebrate the life of the person in question
