One thing I find really annoying on here is when a Mod closes a thread because they personally find it annoying. This isn't directed at any particular Mod, but IMO a messageboard is about diverse opinions and as long as rules aren't being broken people should be allowed to express themselves freely without the chat being censored or gagged because one person disagrees with it. Clearly there are some threads that the vast majority don't want (specifically political and racist ones). So why don't we have a system where a thread can only be closed if say ten people on it vote for it to be closed? Hopefully free speech will prevail here and this thread won't be closed.
No religion, no politics are the only two rules we set up on here, the threads closed last night were slipping into the latter camp and had too much petty name calling, it was right to close them.
I didn't find it personally annoying. My own opinion was limited to where I felt the thread was going content wise. It had long since stopped being a discussion or a debate and just deteriorated into childish name calling.
I'm not specifically talking about last night's threads, but threads being closed in general. The worst examples are when a thread is popular and active (suggesting posters want it to remain open) and it is still closed.
Personally if people want to bicker and start calling each other playground names I'd leave them to it so long as they're not destroying a good debate others are trying to have.
I'm sure I speak for the others when I say we do try to keep our personal preferences apart when deciding to close a thread and if it's a popular discussion, I do try to give it a bit more lee-way, but ultimately, there tends to reach a point when it's just a few dogmatic types banging a point. Feel free to PM the mod in question if it happens again, and ask for clarification. Mods shouldn't dictate what's posted, we're more here to tidy up YOUR board. Boards run better when the posters police themselves IMHO but it can be a tight rope with some topics.
I don't totally disagree Bob, what I'd say is that in my experience, people can sometimes let these things fester and drag it back up again later, spoiling another thread if they're not nipped closer to the bud.
The way this board is modded is spot on. The odd thread gets closed but they are fairly few and far between and they probably deserved to be in any case. The one thing I will say is that some posters( no names)may not be over the top with abusive language but continuously post stuff deliberately designed to wind people up . This type of poster is equally as damaging to this board, if not more so.
Considering the amount of traffic on here, the amount of threads locked or deleted is tiny, there's plenty of leeway given, it's only when they start to get messy that something is done about them. Note to self, stop sounding like a moderator.
I thought the threads should have been closed, one of them was OK to start with but the other one was pretty pointless and designed to troll other forum users, well done moderator DMD
Agreed. One was pretty pointless and unnecessary and quite rightly closed, whereas I was quite enjoying the other one. It was a debate on who likes and who doesn't like something. I think one should have been left open. But then again, I don't see it from a mod's point of view, and it may have started to get out of hand.
