Sunderland have been forced to pay compensation to a fan who was knocked out by a stray training ground strike from Djibril Cisse.

The un-named supporter was a regular spectator at the Black Cats’ Academy of Light base.

He successfully sued the club for what’s believed to be a four-figure sum after he was left briefly unconscious by the off-radar shot from the French striker two seasons ago.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn revealed: “A fan was hit in the face and the club was sued and ended up with a settlement - that wasn’t good.

“We had a supporter who got a bad injury. I think it was one of Djibril Cisse’s misses where he had a shot from 20 yards. It knocked a supporter out. It was quite serious.

Sunderland have since closed off training to spectators, and Quinn added: “We had several problems with open training sessions. As soon as something happened, everyone was Twittering and the world knew about it.

“It was a problem if there was an injury and it was a problem if word was getting out about how we set up for free-kicks or set-pieces.

“And there was also the issue of potentially having a training ground bust-up witnessed. Those sort of things happen at every club from time.”

Quinn hopes to find a way to allow spectators back in to see Steve Bruce’s squad train in future, and the Irishman added: “It’s something we’re considering because we want to encourage fans and players to reconnect.”

Fully respect to all Quinny's points there which has just changed my stance. Keep it private I say. Instead, small groups players could visit schools after training, show them some of the training techniques used by modern day footballers then invite them to join in. If they sent out a couple of groups a couple of times a month I don't think it would interfere with training.
