It's on the Liverpool board because A I'm a Liverpool fan and B The article mentions Liverpool by name on topic please
I sort of agree with sticking it up UEFA and FIFA, but feel this is nothing more than a bluff to get them to shape up... On the downside, I live in the North West and get to most away games from the Midlands up...I would never get to see Chelsea play if their away matches were overseas...I never get tickets for Anfield or OT due to demand anyway, so end up at Stoke, Bolton, Wigan, Villa etc
I'm don't think any break away group would would replace the Premier League, but it could certainly replace the Champions League. And I wonder if the Uefa Financial fair play rules are a motivation behind this ?
Can't imagine anything worse. Those clubs which are well run and try to abide by sound financial principles will be left in the dirt while the money greedy, soul destroying clubs such as Man City will rule the roost. Footballs new dark age.
Why? What has the premiership got that would not be available to a breakaway group that consisted of the top teams in Europe? If such a Super league was formed then you can almost guarantee that the founding clubs would adopt a form of franchise policy in which none of them would be in danger of expulsion/ relegation for at least 3-5 seasons. The money that could be generated from the tv rights alone would be astronomical and wouldn't have to shared with other teams and governing bodies.
The difference that I was pointing to, was that the premier league is regulated by the FA, whilst the Champions League is regulated by Uefa. The PL is already one of the biggest money spinning leagues, so I can't see why any team would want to break away from it. The CL however, if under the auspices of Uefa, could be a candidate for teams to break away from and form an alternative competition.
how would it work with no promotion, relegation? what if, say, man city wanted to join in 2 years time? or tottenham? would they be told to stay in the prem or whatever?
Sounds like the clubs are using their weight to get UEFA to lean on FIFA. Let's be honest, even setting aside all the corruption and mismanagement at FIFA, the international calendar needs a rethink.
Agreed. Clubs like Wolves, Sunderland and Stoke who run their clubs well and don't get into excessive debt will suffer massively. The bigger clubs like United, Arsenal and Liverpool will all leave and TV revenues for the other clubs will suffer. The bigger clubs will get richer and the smaller clubs will get poorer.
The breakaway clubs would not need the FA or UEFA ot FIFA come to that. The PL only makes money because the top English sides play in it. How much do you think Sky would pay if the top PL match was Stoke v Norwich (no disrespect to these 2 clubs) whilst at the same time Liverpool/Arsenal/United/Chelsea v Real Madrid was available? From a business standpoint the PL does does not make sense if biggest English sides go.
In exactly the same way as US franchises work. If a club wanted to join at a later date then they would have to prove that they had the performace to qualify, the ground capacity and facilities plus a sound business plan.
like a franchise? I suppose if they went for the grading system (facilities, debt, success etc.) Would be hard for other teams though as they wouldn't be able to break through due to the money being in this 'super league'
Agreed it would be hard but not impossible. For a similar model in the Uk just look at Rugby League's Super league. Every club must maintain both performace and business standards. Every 3 years (I think) they are reviewed and if the fail they are expelled. At that point 'junior' clubs can apply to join.
Yeah, I follow super league and that's where I got it from. However, the gulf in class between the top nl1 clubs and the bottom sl clubs isn't as large as the prem/euro one would. The salary cap also helps maintain chances for clubs to mount challenges and become mire secure after promotion.
