Been wanting to learn for a while now. I know the basic moves but know nowt about tactics. So basically, where/how do I start.

i used to be canny played till I was about 30 best to find a mate who is ok and play him and watch and learn its always fun to wallop some one new in 4 moves so be careful

My nephew travels all over the UK playing chess comps. When he was at school he bought himself a cheap chess computer and played through the levels until he became very good, he still uses a similar one now to practice.
I used to play with my dad all the time, lost count of the amount of times he gave me my queen back, there are some apps you can get where you can either play the computer or humans
A long time ago in the army I was shown how to play backgammon. Another game that I’ve forgotten how to play.

I played a bit when the world went chess crazy in 1972.
The Fischer Spassky final was amazing. All the shenanigans before during and after were brilliant.
I bought a book with whole story and all the games set out. It’s worth buying if you can get it.

I used to play it loads as a kid. Just watch and learn defence and attack tactics from what your opponent does, which for me was usually the computer.
Backgammon will come back to you quickly enough. Chess is great if you have the time and patience. Used to play at school, then started again when I met my wife 15 years sgo.
We're very evenly matched, the bitch! It's best to find someone at your level or it gets boring pretty quickly. There's liads of apps like chess.com where you can play folk at various levels

I'm sure it involves a smoking jacket (or inside out rain coat), biro to smoke through, pernod, ouzo marmalade and salt and prawns for pawns. lol apart from that I haven't got a clue mate.
Played club chess for about 5 years back in the day. There's loads of books you can get on it and, frankly, if you don't do a bit of work on that front you'll be miles behind people who do. But it's a great social game, although lay off the beer. My old club used to meet in the British Legion in Epsom where the beer was cheap and the standard of play got pretty crappy by about 9 O'clock...
i enjoy a game daily i have microsoft chess on my pc and it came installed you can alter the proficiency level as and when you get better if the computer is losing you need to step up a level its free to download from microsoft playstore

Was my school chess champion. My uncle who taught me died this year. Can't see me ever playing the game again
sorry to hear that Bri on a lighter note i had a hole in my trousers pocket and was not averse to bashing the bishop on occasions.................
