Hi all, I have Twitter and often tweet about Watford (amongst other things) but often feel like Im banging my head against a brick wall (most of my friends support Arsenal or Manchester United, or have no interest in football). Anyone on here have Twitter? I'm @ewanmay93
Contrary to the media which seems to assume that everybody is on twitter, facebook etc, that is not the case. There are huge numbers of us that have never joined these sites and have no intention or interest to join. I signed up to face book once only so I could take part in a group site for one specific purpose. Now, every few days I get notifications of people who want to be my friend, and I can only assume that somebody has access to my address book. Some requests are from people I know and some are not. Contrary to media thinking, it is possible to live a happy and fulfilled live without taking part in social media.
When you're in a group discussing what's in the paper. In an answer to the initial question, I was but not anymore.
This explains Facebook: I too am on Twitter - true it is a networking site custom made for inane chatter - but it's also an excellent source for news/match updates/rumours etc.
Most of today's technical advances in mobile communication seem to be custom made for inane chatter, judging by the number of seemingly barely literate lumps with mobile phones shuffling around town centres and shopping malls mouthing vacantly or twitching their fingers frantically and then walking into folks. Smart phones they may be and undoubtedly smarter than most of their owners.
Unless your famous does anyone really care what is said - often just ends up with loads of abuse and somebody getting into trouble it seems.
I'm also on twitter; @kevinmiller1978 Twitter is generally for celeb stalkers but find it very useful for news: watford, football and in general. Also quite good for seeing some of the banter between Watford players, and the spirit it shows in the team.
Mark, I am in much the same position as you regarding Facebook. To get round the problem of getting email messages from them I set up a new email account, which I made my Facebook email contact. I'm not sure I remember the email address, now, but I don't get hassled by Facebook. The other week I had to do a one-off thing through Facebook so I set up a completely fake Facebook account. Within minutes of setting it up I had over 20 requests for friends from people in Pakistan. The name I chose was not Pakistani, it was something like Harry Jones.
Had a similar problem with Skype a few years ago. After downloading, installing and setting an account up, I gathered the kids around to speak to their older brother in Oz. When we opened the program up, the first thing we saw was a message - complete with explicit video - from some prostitute outlining her 'areas of expertise' & offering her services. Cue three goggle-eyed boys, one disgusted girl and two red-faced parents. I have to admit to secretly trying it one more time before uninstalling it....
Interesting points made about the validity of social media. Is it a generational thing? I am 20 years old so all of my friends have a Facebook account and I know quite a few people who have a Twitter account, and therefore I see a lot more value in having one as it is a means to organise things, share photos and keep up with how people are doing, as opposed to someone of an older age who does not know as many people with such social media accounts. As with anything, there are downsides to it. As long as you are careful and dont get involved with something you're not 100% sure about I generally find it ok!
I suspect that to some extent it is generational, but as with most social media sites they started out with good intentions but have been abused. Take the forums as an example, probably this one is better than some, and you see abuse being used as the norm. I do have one Twitter site bookmarked on the computer, the #WatfordFC one, but find that it is not something I would want constantly going off on my mobile. The repeated messages, and nonsense that is constantly being put out is a bore. It always amazes me that because it has been reported on Twitter it must be true. As BB says it has it's uses, but not as a source of decent information, which is why so much of it appears on the rumours thread. Yes I have a Facebook account, but I forget about it for weeks on end unless I want to know what my kids are up to and we haven't spoken to them on the phone. Some of the things I have learnt about people I know slightly would make them blush, but they seem to think that no one reads what they write, except those it is intended for. I often laugh in a shopping centre to see two people walking side by side, both on mobile phones, and I wonder if they are talking to each other. I would much rather have a good old gossip to someone than try to put it into 140 letters.
I have been known to send a message to Mrs NZ on Facebook, asking her if she would like a cup of tea, when I have been in the same room as her!
The problem with social media sites is that once you put data/content etc on them (essentially it is stored on their servers) it is there's to do with as they please...read the click through agreement carefully!!
