  1. What i mean is, do people think that only thick people do labour work?

It's just because all my experience so far has been in I.T. type work.

But there's this job opportunity i might be getting, that's basically all labour work, and it doesn't really take an educated person to do the job, but the wages look pretty good.

    16k a year.

So i'm thinking, it's a change in the type of work i do, but why should i care? It's not a very complex job, and it doesn't take much intelligence to do, but the money is good.

Anyone else here doing jobs like this? It would be for a building/manufacturing company.

I just think that i'm dumbing myself down a bit though. I know it's stupid, but i'm thinking about this scenario....

I get a girlfriend, meet her parents, and they ask me what i do for a living... and they may think of me as a neanderthal if i tell them what i do, because all it is, is basically lifting and fitting things. All parents would like it if their daughter was with a bloke with a classy job.

Still, i guess it sounds more impressive than telling them I'm unemployed...

I got 11 A*s in GCSE's and spent portions of this summer working in a factory doing manual labour for around 8 hours a day getting up at 4am. It's not a difficult job by any stretch of the imagination and no you don't need to be a genius to do it, but I have respect for those who do it because it's a hard slog.

Saying that, most the staff didn't have any C+ grades at GCSE or A-levels and had been working there for 15+ years, but that didn't make me think any less of them because they were all cracking people and brilliant craic.

I work in Peters lol. My girlfriend's mam and dad are well off with top jobs and they didn't care one bit about my job haha. As long as you make their daughter happy :)

I think it's insulting to say that about people in that area of work.

I am a part time lifeguard, not the most well paid job but it takes a lot of skill and guts. I saved a 5 year old boys life with CPR, I bet some 'brainboxes' couldn't do it.

    A job is a job.

Plus at the end of the day it's money, and experience. Although I imagine my opinion counts for very little, I say go for it, but continue looking for something else you want to do.

Definitely. At the end of the day, work is work. If you did meet a canny lass (and you didn't drive her away with your not606 obsession) would you really care what her parents thought? 19 year old lad with a 16k a year job sounds better than 19 year old unemployed lad with a propensity to post 6 million threads on a website in which he predominantly talks to blokes....

I definitely wouldn't say doing manual work makes you less intelligent or any less of a person, I prefer hands on kind of work to be honest, I have the correct experience and qualifications to work in either one (for the most part) but prefer a job with a more hands on approach, I get bored sitting answering phones or selling things standing in the same place.

Give me a hands on factory job any day of the week, something that keeps you fit and active.

Could you try harder to insult people who work hard for a living at manual jobs often on lower than average wages, you classify manual work as for the dumb and unintelligent.

  11. I never said that i think that about people who do labour type jobs mate, i'm just saying a lot of other people do think that. My family kept on encouraging me to do my I.T. job because they think I'm too intelligent to be wasted in a labour job, they don't mean anything buy it, they just wanted to see me do well is all.

One morning I spent about 5 hours before lunch packing revision books into boxes and then stacking boxes up and moving pallets across the floor. And bloody hell, it doesn't half make you appreciate the work that goes on when you pick one of the books up later. And makes lunch taste all the sweeter. Time flies when you're busy.

Couldn't do a call centre job, the day would just drag.

To be honest, it's work! Any work is better than no work, and manual labour is as good as any work! And it'll make you ripped so you can have more chance of getting a girlfriend ;)

  15. Also, it's just that if i ever do get a girlfriend, i want them to feel some sort of security that their daughter will be provided for by a successful and intelligent bloke, and they may not think that about me if i do this job.

    I'm just being paranoid.

I worked on a construction site for a year and in a factory for 6 months and really enjoyed it, I had weekends off which was great. I'm working in an office now which is slightly better pay but I miss the banter and don't look forward to going into work!
