I have been waiting (for what seems ages now) for news of which players Charlton are going to release. From what Addicks fans said last season I thought the Doc would be a free and possible Hayes (because they have gone up). I haven't heard a thing, has anyone. Obviously it wouldn't be great if they came up on a free and we couldn't sign them due to the takeover, but every other club has released players already. In an ideal world I wouldn't mind them buying Beever for £750,000+ and we get Doc and Hayes as well. Can anyone shed any light on this - perhaps Waddock has had a word with Powell and they won't be released till we are in a position to sign them. Ron, I don't know how to involve Charlton fans in this, can you do that?
i have heard that doc was released, not sure about any others. but first, we need to lift the embargo
Not sure if either of them would want to drop to league 2 or our low wages, but I hope they do as we need to build with league 1 quality for when we do go up!
I think it seems very unlikely we could afford either judging by the cost cutting measures the club has been making to try get us back in to shape. Both are good enough for league one and having previously been at championship clubs I am sure were also on a good wage. I also think it very unlikely we would get anywhere near £750k for Beavon, as he is in the last year of his contracts, is 28 and clubs know we have know money!! If we were to sell I think we would be very lucky to get £500k. Doherty has definitely been released: http://www.teamtalk.com/charlton-athletic/7746245/Euell-among-released-quintet
I copied the thread onto the Charlton forum and posted the link to this thread and the Charlton mods are happy with that.
Cheers Ron. I guess you are right, we would be lucky to get either. I just hope there are some players left by the time we are allowed to sign them. It reminds me so much of 3 seasons ago when P.Taylor couldn't sign anyone.
Unfortunately Cardiff I think it may be worse than that from an ability to sign players point of view, as the budget will be much smaller. However, long term I think that it is a good thing as we will be hopefully more of a sustainable club financially. I would hope the aim this season is to bring on the youngsters who are in the first team squad such as Stewart, Dunne, Kewley-Graham, McClure and start a rebuilding process.
I fully agree with giving the youngsters a go and I have high hopes for Stewart and McClure, however I would like to see an experienced centre back coaching as he is playing, the Doc really made a difference when he joined. TBH I thought Tunnicliffe was young and needed an experinced head next to him, I thought we were expecting too much from him and Winfield both who were under 25. Therefore to go even younger could be dangerous. I agree that Hayes might be a step too far but the Doc is 32 and may just want regular football, as far as I'm aware he is still a free agent (but then I did thing he was still at Charlton so what do I know).
I don't think we were expecting too much from Tunnicliffe, he had nearly 100 career appearances before he came to us of which half were at league one level. Winfield too is at 150 games. Don't get me wrong footballers will learn more throughout their career but experience should not have been and I do not believe it was a factor in them not playing well last year. Neither were good enough ability wise.
