I realize lots of people may be excited if he comes to arsenal. However even if he should prove a success is defensive midfield really where we need to spend. I know people are crying out for a defensive rock in midfield but in keeping with our general style of play i guarantee he will be told to venture forward. Remember song in his first season of coming to the fore? He was exactly what people yearn for m'vila to be. In addition we have frimpong and coquelin who are both more talented than song imo. People underestimate coquelin's tackling whilst all frimpong needs to do is learn to cool it a bit and is currently a bit rash. How about we just keep song with coquelin as back up and shift frimpong out on loan? Like i said he may well end up being a success but call me sentimental frimpong and coquelin both have the club at heart and have ability. Won't we be better off buying a back up striker or creative midfielder of high caliber...? For all those reasons i for one hope the transfer does not go through!

M'Villa is a better passer of the ball and a more mature player. If the problem with our team is that the defence is over exposed then it makes sense to fix that problem with a DM - especially when Song has never been able to do that job well. He brings extra height that Coq doesn't.

Its hard to say. I like the fact that M'villa would give us height, energy and power down the middle.

He's also a very accurate passer so with Podolski and Van Persie up front we may end up playing a little more direct. Which would be exactly the right thing to do.

I think we would go back to playing a simular style to our 1998 squad.(only with a more modern shape) Podolski Wacott and RVP counter attcaking at pace while the likes of M'villa and Song/Arteta break up play and get the ball quickley moving.

  5. I have to say I have never been that sold on M'Vila. He is a simple player - gets it and passes it short, tackles well. We've had a few of those over the years and whilst important in a team, it's not what we are missing.

What a childish response Jayram <doh> I asked you a straight forward question : What do you think we are missing ?

  10. Admittedly a couple of great long passes in there, but I could counter with this:

Agree with HotHead. and I think it's obvious that we've been missing a defensive midfielder to shield the back four and break up opposition play in the middle. Also to cut out the ball through the middle that leaves our CBs exposed. I think this is the most obvious area for improvement next season and if we got M'Vila, I think we would leak far less goals next season.

  12. It was another stupid question Piskie - because we've discussed it to death for well over a year on this board. You know exactly what my thoughts are, so you just want to get into another argument about the same stuff we disagree on.

  14. I just dont think we can use Youtube compilations though. I do think M'Vila is a good player, but the vast majority of the time his game is about short passing and tackling. As I said, valuable, but I dont really think it is what will take us to the next level. Also dont think that any player we bring in to DM is sufficiently good enough to warrant a claim that we would concede far less goals, because our problems are to do with our system and approach, not the players. Like Song, if M'Vila sent too much time attacking, then we'd still be left open.

I see Coquelin as more of an Arteta style player than traditional DM. Coquelin's passing ability, size, mobility, defensive awareness and so forth make better for a deep lying play maker than for a DM.

Agree that Coquelin is a more mobile type of midfielder than a traditional DM. I really think that we are lacking a shield for the back four, it's why we've been exposed so often this season. The game against Norwich was a glaring example. I think Frimpong could play that role in the future, but I think we need a proven and experienced DM now as I don't think we have the luxury of waiting to see if Frimpong will make it at the top level.

Considering that's wilsheres position that would imply one of song, frimpong or coqluelin don't have a long term future here. The point of my argument was we have players who can do the exact same job and if you see M'vila playing for his club he Marauds forward pretty often to join in on attack. For £18mil plus a bit more we could get a good back up second striker or a top class creative midfielder.
