I'm looking to get back into football this September. However, I haven't played for 3-4 years now, so getting match-fit is paramount. Anyone playing for a team at the moment that could give me some tips on getting back to it? I'm 21, so sadly not at the age where you can still naturally be at optimum fitness but I have managed to keep a steady amount of strength, health & fitness. I attend the gym pretty inconsistently and really need some sort of football-directed plan to stick to. Any help will be greatly appreciated with rep. I promise to work out how to do this asap.

Work around where you play. CM - short runs, FB - long sprints, etc. Also if you have an iPhone (or maybe a Blackberry?) there's a few decent fitness apps you can get <ok>

Just go running, it does wonders for fitness. Saying that playing football gets you fit as well. Do a lot of walking as well, instead of driving/taking the bus etc.

Practice short sprints to start. Nothing more than 30 metre bursts.

Also work on overall stamina to run 2k a day but don't forget you CAN break this up.

After a few weeks try to increase your distance in solid blocks.

Football is about a burst of energy and having the ability to sustain this again and again.

I usually play up gateshead on sat mornings I'm very unfit 16st but like wise doing it for fitness and shed pounds xD. Best thing I think is finding a field running your tits off till you ****ed, then a slight jog and repeat does wonders for improved burst of speed.

Normally the hardest thing for me is finding incentive do get fit. If you really want to be able to play football then you're half way there already in my mind

Me too. I've made a big ass set of videos/songs etc to get me going, but it's still kinda hard. I had this idea though: a website (and furthering this an app) that is based around motivation. I think it would be a decent idea.

That is actually a great idea.

For the last two years ive barely played any football or much cardio at all to be honest. Being only about 11st i've tried to spend my time at the gym bulking and am regretting this now as its had marginal effect overall except adding some much needed strength to my game. Just DLing the adidas app to see what its like! I often find myself getting a huge burst of motivation for a short spell of time, but im going to devise a structured routine and go for it over the next two months.

If you want to improve leg strength and stamina which is obviously cruical in football in the comfort of your own home, running up and down the stairs can be a good work out*,

Im also looking to join a team, anyone know any 11 side leagues within walking or metro distance from centre of town?

*exclaimer---"however do it with care maybe dangerous and maybe better using one step"

As I said; work on short sprints and then stamina.

A good guide for short sprints is tennis courts when not in use. Sprint to the end. Get breath back and go to the other end as it's roughly the distance you'll do short and sharp bursts to get a ball.

For stamina; In a game you will run at average speed about 3km so work on stamina so distance becomes a smaller factor.

Combine the two and your fitness level improves to be able to play a game.
