Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne has said that the club will continue speaking to a number of potential managers this week. The Premier League side are currently without a permanent boss following last week's sacking of Paolo Di Canio, which came just six months after the Italian was appointed in March. The 45-year-old, who signed 14 new players in the transfer window, collected just one point from the five top-flight games he took charge of this term. Kevin Ball was appointed on a temporary basis after Di Canio's departure, and has overseen a League Cup win over Peterborough and another defeat in the Premier League, with Liverpool running out 3-1 victors at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. However, Byrne has insisted Sunderland officials will not rush into a decision on the next manager. "Clearly as a matter of priority, our efforts are presently focused on appointing a new head coach," she is quoted as saying in Sunday's matchday programme. "As you would expect with a position of this magnitude, there has been a lot of interest. However, there is no definitive timescale on an appointment as we are carefully examining all of the options available to us. "I am sure that you have read and heard all kinds of rumours and speculation about potential targets, but much of this is guesswork. "We have had contact with some interested parties already and have others to speak to in the coming days. "As soon as we have identified the right person to take the club forward, we will make an announcement." http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2013/09/29/4298647/-? I for one was hoping for some 'official' news today... But it looks like it could be another week?!
I'm hoping we make a calm and correct decision ........ if it's taking time it may mean the 'new man' is already employed elsewhere.
Reckon it'll be after both the Swansea away and the nags at SOL lads two tough games to bring a manager in for and by then we could quite possibly be a further 6-9 points away from safety. Hell of a job for whoever we do get to make up that gap.
I agree to the reasoning to the possible negative situation of dropping a new manager in the deep end as of right now, with the next few difficult games coming up- Ball can used as the scapegoat (and if he does well then that's a bonus)- bringing in a new manager later on with a 'easier' fixture list could have more tangible and conducive impact
An easier fixture list? Fulham, Palace, Southampton and West Brom in the first 5 games. A new manager is needed now, and needs to get a grip, not literally, ala PDC. But needs time starting now.
I reckon it'll be next Sunday or Monday before the Swansea game - mainly because it's better to go into a club with an away fixture rather than a home one - if you start at home to Man U then it will go one of either way - and they have lost 2 league games in a row! Can't see them making it 3 and they will be much more up for it at Sunderland I reckon (hopefully they'll be a little complacent but time will tell.)
Have to agree. I really dislike this namby-pamby ****e about starting a new manager off with games that are suitable. If he's any good then get him in as soon as possible no matter who we're playing.
