Yuge game. I'm feeling quite emotional about it all really, we don't normally do semi finals. A draw won't be a disaster but howay let's do em.
Expecting to get ****ed over by VAR Southampton v Newcastle United (20:00) REF STUART ATTWELL ASSITANTS Darren Cann and James Mainwaring Fourth Official : Thomas Bramall VAR: Andre Marriner AVAR: Nick Hopton
I think that's the key. Our boys need to back themselves over a 2-legged tie agaibst Southampton. A one-off cup game would be higher risk
Yesterday's result will hurt Saints. They thought they had gone ahead (and temporarily lifted out of the relegation zone), then had it chalked off by VAR, then conceded a goal to lose. And back to bottom of the league. We'll have to hope that dented their confidence a bit going into the semi.
I am worried about our scoring ability as well. One goal in our last 4 PL games is not good and 4 goals in 6 is way below our previous free-scoring form. Urgently need a bigger contribution from our midfield and we may need to start bringing in more attacking players, like St Maximin, to improve things. Probably won't happen in this game but if we are down going into the 2nd leg, we may need to sacrifice some of our defensive prowess to take some more attacking risks. It will be interesting to see if Howe is prepared to do this, or just hope that Almiron finds his shooting boots again.
I've watched Man United yesterday and I've concluded they're much better than us also, so I think newcastle will lose the final even if they get there. I had previously been looking at the table thinking it's a 50/50, but everytime I watch them they improve and I feel like newcastle are struggling . Are newcastle players beginning to tire?
They are certainly scoring more goals than us, although their last two results are the same or worse than we did against these sides, so while they may look better they are not exactly showing it in the points column. I am hoping it changes when Isak gets up to speed. Wonder whether it might be worth trying an Isak, Guimares, Joelinton, Willock, Almiron midfield, with Isak playing off Wilson, and see whether that helps. Bottom line is though, we are creating chances, just not putting them away. It might lose us some of our defensive resilience, but I don't mind us taking risks like that, especially the position we are in now in the PL.
It looks like they're doing the same thing over and over again to me... there's something missing but of they change it they might lose what they have. It doesn't look like they'll be doing much or anything in January so I guess they'll just plod on . Barring a total disaster top 8 should be achieved and we've got to be pleased with that.
I think he'll play the same way, 4-3-3, but will drop Willock and Wilson for ASM and Isak. Depending how the game goes, we could see a Fulham repeat and have both strikers on at the same time. I think you're far too harsh on Isak.
