ALLY McCOIST was happy with the increased tempo his substitutes showed as they beat Elgin 1-0 â with the manager heaping praise on Fraser Aird for inspiring a victory at City. The Light Blues boss watched the team he fielded in the first half at Borough Briggs dominate without making a breakthrough they would certainly have deserved. But that changed after the restart when a fresh XI came on, picked up the pace and took a lead through Airdâs fine individual goal. The winning margin could and probably should have been greater but the manager was content to edge the contest and round off the clubâs two-game northern tour positively. McCoist said: âIt looks as though our team in the second half has come on and won the game for us. âWith that said, the boys who played in the first are telling us thatâs happened because they have run the opposition ragged first but Iâm not sure Iâm believing that. âThere was certainly a change in tempo â as there was on Sunday at Brora â and the great thing is thereâs now a great deal of competition for places. âPeople know they are going to have to work hard and earn their place in the team to get games. âI was delighted with Fraser in particular because we were a little bit disappointed with him at the weekend. âItâs very early in pre-season but he was 100 times the player tonight and he was really positive, he took the ball into areas and his body position was different. âHe was great and thatâs all you can ask from the young lads. He attempted to improve and listened to us. âIt was a great performance from Fraser and I thought he was the difference between the sides in the second half.â Although it was disappointing in a sense not to win more handsomely, there were definitely signs of understandings developing in certain areas of the park. And McCoist is confident that as the players keep getting to know each other, they will click into gear in due course. He added: âA bit like Sunday, we were definitely better in the second half than we were in the first. âWe created an awful lot of chances, really good ones, and I donât have any doubt weâll execute a greater percentage of those with a little bit more sharpness.â
