Just goes to show how vital medicals are. Surely footballers have regular checks on their hearts etc because there has been a rise in footballers collapsing on the pitch. They obviously have medicals before they sign for a club but that could be once in 5 years or more. They need to be done regularly to stop these things from happening.

    RIP to the fellow.

The Saints players appear to get thorough health checks every 3 months or so. I believe Adkins calls them MOTs.

It doesn't say why he collapsed. It could have been anything, some things can't be detected before hand. It's just very unfortunate.

My thoughts go out to his family, RIP.

lots of players have these undiagnosed heart conditions and unless you play for a club which can afford full medical checks, they play without even knowing there is something wrong with them. very sad stuff.

What about Sevilla's Antonio Puerta? Surely their medical checks are pretty good? Or did he die from something else?

Apparently Puerta was walking shortly after! Just seen the video, very sad indeed!

Marc Vivien Foe's death in the 2003 Confederations Cup was equally as tragic - perhaps one of the most high-profile 'on the pitch' deaths in recent years.

    Other high-profile names:

Naoki Matsuda - Japanese defender who played in the 2002 World Cup.

Daniel Jarque - Spanish defender who played his whole career at Espanyol.

Incidently; all three died of cardiac arrest.

Sometimes perfectly healthy people drop dead. A young player in an U16 league last year had a heart attack whilst playing and died. Maybe a reminder that anything can happen.
