So another UTD player get the top scoring record Roo with 50 and counting Charlton with 49 Sadly no Chavbus player will ever get near this record. Feel free to congratulate him here.
Greaves 44? But you probably did not know he played for Chelsea before Spuds. Congrats to Scouser though
Wayne Rooney 50 UTD Bobby Charlton 49 UTD Gary Lineker 48 Leicester/Barca/Spuds Jimmy Greaves 44 Spuds/West Ham and a small London team Michael Owen 40 Liverpool/Real
He did play way before my time and we only hear about his time at the Spuds when he was at his best. Still Im off to watch the Prem years on sky sports now
Sir Bobby is probably the best English player of all time. But let's not allow paranoia and bitterness to get in the way of giving the Evertonian his due credit. Of his 50 goals... 12 in friendlies 16 in WC qualifiers 1 in WC 14 in EC qualifiers 5 in EC A total of 38 goals in competitive games Compared to Sir Bob, of his 49 goals... 22 in friendlies 5 in WC qualifiers 4 in WC 4 in EC qualifiers 1 in EC A total of 27 goals in competitive games Ah.....but Rooney scored all his goals against San Marino. No he didn't, he scored 5 against San Marino. Sir Bob scored 5 against Luxembourg. I should make it clear that I care so little about this subject that I am happy to devote a fair amount of time to winding up angry Dippers about it. I may even, on occasion, mention the name Robbie Fowler as evidence that scoring goals for England isn't as easy as some make out, particularly if you are overweight and coked up to the eyeballs.
I can imagine. "I've been looking on dullfootbalfacts.com and it turns out QPR only used up 82.3% of their away allocation for a game against Burnley on a Wednesday evening in February 1974. Wait til I tell the lads on the forum!" "**** it, I need another line."
It is depressing that he is our top goal scorer. He is a good player of international level but he is nowhere near the best striker we have ever produced. He is yet to stand up when it really counts - 1 goal in 11 world cup appearances covering three tournaments is shocking - Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch have better ratios. Every time we play we watch him run around, fluff chances, get frustrated, drop too deep and nearly get sent off. Watching England and listening to the media blab about average players like Rooney is the most frustrating experience. The best thing he's ever done at a world cup was that cross for Sturridge. In my life time I'd rate the following English strikers above him: - Lineker - Fowler - Sherringham - Michael Owen - Shearer Especially Shearer and Owen. It says a lot about the lack of depth up front that Rooney is the no.1 - in the nineties he would have struggled for a game. Then you have the players from the past who were better such as: - Charlton - Finney - Greaves - Lofthouse Its very sad and says a lot about our national team.
Fowler didn't play many games for England and scored very few goals. Invariably he was terrible when he did make the England team. You're taking the piss by including him in that list! Crouch scored more than three times as many goals for England than Fowler did!
Folwer was barely given a chance by Hoddle and then got injured. You reckon Rooney is our best striker then?
No I don't think he's England's best striker. I'm not sure where you think I said that. Fowler is massively over rated by the Dippers though. He had a few good seasons at the start of his career but was average to abject after that. Ian Wright was a better player than Fowler.
Lol alright mate. 230 goals in the first few seasons is pretty good going then! Consistently banged them in against you lot regardless of where he was. I never stated that you said Rooney was our best striker - it was a question.
Typical dipper, crying that a UTD player is top of the pile for goals scored, just lose your bitterness and congratulate him.
230 goals in 16 years. 116 of those in the first four seasons. As I said, a few good seasons at the start of his career. Pony thereafter.
The thing we will never know is how much better England would have done had its various managers not had this obsession with Rooney, and built team after team around him. My feeling is that the England team has been set up to suit Rooney, rather than being set up to win.
