with the selection, or more so the performance of the team bruce put out early jan we have another week with no game. in hindsight with all the injuries maybe its a relief or maybe it would have given some returning players a chance of a game before liverpool. what is your general take on the fa cup now? personally im saddened at how it is looked upon. i remember when fa cup final day came around, tv used to start morning following the buses, the fans. all the build up for hours, then the game where everyone would watch no matter who was playing. game finished and you'd grab a ball and go outside and talk about the game you just witnessed. so how do you feel about having this empty weekend? surely we should have beaten notts county, we all know how a good cup run lifts the city, or are you reliefed that it happened so as to concentrate on the league. everyone still talks about 1973, wish it could be repeated. anyhow enjoy your free weekend lads no matter where you are or what you do
Ah commachio, memories of days long gone, happy days without tinternet and huge flat screen TV's in pubs. Cup final weekend had a full weeks build up and the day itself. Everything had to be done by 12 so that you could sit in front of that massive TV in the corner of the room, think ours was around 15" and of course it had to be the BBC. The women used to keep the tea and sarnies coming and ya dad had his pipe and bottle of beer, or two. Now I look forward to watching a live game on Saturday then one more on Sunday, am I sorry we are not in it, no. Rather the squad get ready for a good game against Liverpool, this season its a good premier finish I want, next year a top 6 and maybe a cup run.
Quinny and Walton were asked where Sunderland will be in five years time the other night. The answers were interesting: Quinny wanted us established in Europe, Walton said he wanted some silverware. I'd settle for both!
syd im just over 40 so was watching in full colour, dad was a miner at monkwearmouth so guess it was a pretty well paid job (exept the strike). even so it was the highlite of the season. a cup run boosts the the club, the town the fans, everything. maybe im a bit old fashioned in my thinking about the cups, i still want the cup winners cup and european cup to be contested by champions not some fourth placed team.
I remember the days when a season ticket included entry to home FA Cup games. In a time of decling Cup attendances how about reverting to that practice?
I'd love us to still be in the F.A Cup,but these days a strong squad is needed, ours, although improved since last season is still not strong enough in my opinion.I think injuries hit us hard this season and I think its been a blessing in disguise that we havn't progressed in the cups.Next season however,I want us to be still in both cups untill the latter rounds.
Do you remember where you were or what you were doing in 73, i do its vivid in my mind, i was having a bit of hanky panky with my missus being newly weds, I was in married quarters at the time, attached to 36 engr regt Maidstone from 9 para, the build up had been on the telly all day, seem to remember the boat race or grand national around the same day, anyway i was at it like every 4 hours like a kid with a new toy, Not even close to the vinegar strokes i heard the match start, realised the importance in the order of things, and finished so fast it was like id ran an assault course in 60 secs, to get in front of the telly. i had traccy bottom on we scored Porterfield i ran outside, the neighbours all new me, and were supporting the lads, 2 guys had come running out of their houses at the same time, we hugged and did a jig for a few mins, i could hear some thing happening on the box, and ran back inside, there was constant knocking on the door but i didn't move i ended up with around 30 couples crammed in watching, When Monty's save came along there was more noise than Sid James after a win. Ended up with a barbie, lucky enough i bought loads of stocks for the big occasion and the garden was massive, a cracking time was had by all, ahhh well those were the days my friend. I f you reading this Roy enjoy the memories
I'm a lot younger than you lot and my take and my mates is that the FA Cup just gets in the way The Premier League is the daddy and IMO it is a shame we have yet another week of no premier league action FA Cup weekends along with International weekends preventing a weekend of premier league football realy irritates me
Not happy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,want to be in everything, dont like modern day managers thinking, sacrifice the cups for prem status. 1973 springs to mind.
Still think that teams like us prioritise games and sadly the cup games take a back seat no matter what managers or chairmen say. Still think the fans would rather go for it with a decent cup run I know I would.
1973 I was lucky enough to see every game including the final but the match that stands out is against Man City in the replay.
