I know it's horrible having this break off the back of the transfer window. Add to the fact it's really hard to get excited about the national side, they will do what they always do, breeze through qualifying then fail miserably at the tournament at the end. Looks like Sam will stick with 90% of the team that failed vs Iceland - we never learn.....

There were several players in that team that didn't come up to expectations after a good season- Kane, Dier and Sterling in Particular-Lallana I have never really rated as an International nor Henderson.
Kane was done in- Would the mid season break had of helped?- I somehow doubt it-That's another thread though-

Thing is, who would we play instead?

It's boring for us, but I think it's fantastic for the squad. Those players not on international duty can train together and have an opportunity to gel before being sent into action.

Always been a massive England supporter, very much a two horse race with City in terms of preference. Until now.

The hooligan hordes, the miserable performances by players who don't seem to care, the abysmal performance of our clueless manager, the anonymous faces of amateurs that run our national FA….and this was in 2002.
Its been the same every other year at every finals we have played in. We build up the players and kid ourselves we have a right good chance because Nobby has score 70 goals this season in the "world's greatest league". Truth is, thats because Nobby gets paid £200 a minute just to train, and for the match day payment he would be happy to take to the pitch sporting a machine gun.
The embarrassing truth is our players are cart horses without wit, artistry or intelligence, the best of who are merely artisans at best and not fit to be playing in a world tournament. We haven't had a prayer of being represented efficiently at a major tournament since Gascoigne (the only authentic world star this country has produced since Bobby Charlton). For former winners and a country that claims to be a major football nation that is piss poor.
I feel the reason behind it is the power of the Premier League, which is swallowing English football whole without spitting out. Greed and personal ambition have taken over from the will to win for the sake of national pride. We have sold our football soul for 33 pieces of silver, and now we must live with it.
I won't tell you the depths of my embarrassment here in France when England were Brexited out this summer. Suffice to say we were not mourned by anyone in mainland Europe, because we didn't deserve to be

So I turn a blind eye to the Slovakia game in the hope that maybe one day my interest in our national side will once again rear its ugly head and I will wax lyrical.
But it could take a while so don't hold yer breath

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I gave up following England when being a celebrity became way more important than being a professional footballer, and when the Manager at the time (SGE) was being dictated to by the players, and was asking them for autographs.

Yes, me too- Hated all this WAGS culture, but then my daughters loved it and still are much more concerned with who has the latest hair style or designer, than with the football- Considering who then buys the magazines, has them on X factor or some similar show and all the other spin offs, I guess its another money maker and unlikely to stop.

I'm afraid it's just another of the many factors that have largely ruined the game over the last few decades.

Hate the wag/reality state that makes people famous for having a camera in their face.

I agree, it's absolutely tragic when young girls say when they grow up they want to be a footballers wife above anything else. What message does that send.......

England ...................listened to last 20 mins or so on radio was it over enthusiasm or just plain not good enough or even a total lack of cohesion...they did seem to spray it about but was it meaningful.
certainly the goal was a very lucky saver .....

I think it goes deeper than that.

I saw an interview recently with a girl of about 14, who when asked what she wanted to do in life said, 'be famous'

This isn't a toddler speaking, this was someone just a couple of years away from leaving school potentially.

When the interviewer then asked her what talent(s) she had that would make her famous, such as perhaps she had a good singing voice, or maybe she was an an amazing dancer, actor, or a painter, or perhaps she wanted to a pioneering person in medicine or maybe a top Lawyer ?

But no. The girl had no talent of any kind for anything, so maybe marrying a footballer is her best option.

I think that says a lot where kids just assume they'll be famous without having any talent and the scope of their ambition is just to be famous without having any outstanding ability.

Mind you it works for plenty I guess.

The world has gone to hell in a handcart and the ambition of youth is apparently to become a celebrity (whatever the hell that means). I guess it means if you can get your face in the media you think you have arrived, but if you have a full-time staff available to get your face up everybody's noses, like the Kardashians, you have officially made it to the ranks of the publicly obnoxious. Throw in a few twitter comments telling your adoring public following that you think they're all arseholes and you have a great thing going that will see you through life in to retirement. The final part of the mix is to need therapy for something called apathy, because the public has turned on you and your life has become a misery so every time you have a bottle of champers in your luxury hot tub you wonder what happened.

If you want, or need, redemption in this now "couldn't care less" world I would suggest that you get your face out of that bloody electronic gadget that rules every minute of your day and look around you and realise the world is beautiful place, if only you lifted your head for a split second to enjoy it and the people it brings in to your life. These rules of public interaction and humility don't apply to those who put on an England shirt (quite clearly) and possibly those who's ambition is limited to an appearance on Celebrity Come Dancing or any other of the shows that now make up what used to be called television. It's Monday and I'd better stop before I make comments that will upset all the future celebrities and footballers and make them turn to regular employment but then again I could be off the hook because most of them can't read or think. Ouch, rant over so bring back the football please and stop forcing us to watch yet another abject performance by the national team and their born again manager because I have enough off hearing the same old cobblers from them and all the others.
