I'm not much of a tennis fan but why do you get labelled a bigot or sexist for suggesting, quite logically, that it's silly for women at Wimbledon to earn the same as the blokes? Does it happen in any other sport where the following is true? - Smaller TV audience - Less interest from sponsors - Cheaper tickets/lower demand (probably- couldn't be arsed to look it up) - Fewer sets - Poorer quality of play
Sadly, any male player brave enough to stick their heads above the parapet and state the bleedin' obvious automatically gets it between the eyes from all the feminists etc. It's patently obvious that the women, if paid by the time spent on court, are ludicrously overpaid. In reality, not only the time on court but the quality of play is also inferior to the men. Based on that, I would say they should receive 50% of what men are paid but it'll never happen...
At the very least, the women should play 5 sets. They're incredibly fit, they're physically capable of it. We're stuck with Victorian tennis rules that need to change
The girls do love a bit of equality, anyone noticed even the word actress seems to have disappeared from the dictionary, thespians are all actors now. Of course, the equality issues are usually rapidly forgotten when it comes to the matter of divorce.
They could always dispense with the men's and women's singles and instead just hold one competition; you'd very quickly see whether there's equality there then.
None of the 3 generations of women in my house this evening think they should have equal pay. The women tennis players used their bargaining power very effectively many years ago. Good for them. But there is no law saying they have to be rewarded the same, it's up to the sponsors and organisers.
Ludicrous! The ladies are about 856 tines more beautiful to watch so deserve the sweetest strawberries and currency of choice.
Looks like Murray could win a second Wimbledon title. Best prepare myself for the media looping what will be his charismatic, uplifting and inspiring speech. Why is it that that the only home-grown-Ish international tennis superstar of my life seems to be as engaging as Rain Man on mogadon ?
I have said this before. Women tennis players should receive 3/5 the pay of men at these big tournaments.....until women start playing 5 sets In the smaller single sex tournaments Eastbourne, Viginia Slims (if that still exists) they can get anything the market dictates .....for exactly the reason above....the punters, sponsors etc ....however much money their worth is perceived .......this is analogous to women's football. 10 years ago there was no money in the sport, they were all amateurs....now the players are better, there is more organisation, more success...and we have a professional sport (for some) .....but very low paid compared to men... Till women football can fill old Trafford or the Emirates every week..that is the way it will stay...and that is fair.
Novak was brave when he agreed that equal pay was nonsense but was shot down so quickly by the women tennis players and sections of the media that he had to recant speedily. I use the word 'recant' deliberately since any position that does not align with the tenets of the false god of equality is considered heretical! Not wishing to hijack this thread but I've wondered if for some folks, it's that sort of daft and obviously stupid position that led them to an 'out' vote in the referendum as a protest against political correctness gone mad (hence feeling that they now have licence to be racist etc.). Huge extrapolation, I know, and no evidence. Just a thought, that's all.
I don't watch a lot of tennis, bit like boxing I lost interest after the early eighties era of Borg, Connors, McEnroe. But as far as I can see Murray is a superb player, his game has no weak spots and huge variation. Sportsmen aren't paid to have charisma, but again just because he is a bit monotone doesn't make him inarticulate and he can be quite funny too. Some say he's unlucky to have played alongside the all time greats of Djokovic and (best ever for me) Federer. I think the reverse, they have made him as good as he is, thats what real competition does.
