Salmond is a fat ****, he should have choked on a pie years ago and saved us all a lot of ****ey rhetoric.
I'm not trying to bicker here when I say he probably had to sing the song - considering most of his support and indeed sponsorship comes from southern Britain, the last thing he wants is another ABE controversy. Of course he could genuinely have wanted to sing the song as well
He knew the words. He wanted to sing it. We English now love him. And he also helped deliver a silver in the Mixed Doubles. Jolly well done old bean.
I'm no lover of that song, I think it's an insulting dirge of a tune but i've never won a gold medal at the Olympics, so I don't honestly know what I would do if I won. Mind you I don't know the words so I probably would not sing it anyway.
I love GSTQ. We should play it over the tannoy at CP before each game. It'd really get the crowd going.
Celtic-supporting Michael Jamieson won a silver in the swimming a couple of days ago. He's been pictured with the union flag so I don't think he would have had any problem with the anthem had we won gold. Not sure every Celtic supporter would be as happy with the flag, like
The Flag does not bother me one bit, the "Anthem" on the other hand does. I can't speak for Jamieson so I don't know if he would have sung it or not, all i'm saying is a lot of Scots wouldn't, and not all of them are Celtic fans.
I presume most of the Rangers brigade (not sure if that is the right word to use for them) would happily sing along?
I would expect a Scot to have less problems with the Union flag, especially not if he is competing for team GB. The anthem is a wee bit different though since Scotland has it's own anthem and it also assumes that you have loyalty to a Monarch - which is maybe why him singing the anthem is worthy of note. Of course it's all ifs and buts - Murray may actually be a proud Unionist and Monarchist.
Scotland does have it's own anthem but GSTQ is the British anthem, not the English anthem. Hate the tune though, Land of Hope and Glory is much better.
I've noticed Mike is very pro Scottish independence and pro Scotland becoming a republic (though that would not happen if Scotland became independent according to the SNP). Why is this? What difference does it make to an Ulsterman? As for Scotland having its own national anthem: it doesn't. Flower of Scotland is only a recently written song.
I am a product of the random luck of being born into a community which doesn't care for the Union. I do have a few intellectually sound reasons for wanting it's demise though, for instance the regions outside of southern England (including northern England) are uncompetitive for business - they are burdened by the high tax state needed to pay for a large population and it's social services. I can't get a job in Northern Ireland because the wages are so low, the wages are so low because there is absolutely no reason for a multi-national to base themselves here - apart from low wages. It's no coincidence that within the British Isles the territories that have the highest GDP have financial independence, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Republic of Ireland all have large multi-national presences and produce trade surpluses (they export more than they consume) - Scotland, like NI, can't compete for these businesses because their taxation is the same as London without having the domestic population to make a presence there necessary.
