First I am not trying to wind anyone up here. I know Murray is British but what difference does it make to the English the fact that he is Scottish. Is it celebrated in the same way or somewhat diluted. A genuine question. By the way even though I'm Irish I got wrapped up in it today and was cheering him on.
Really massive victory against a real classy player in Djokovic. We've waited for 77 years. Let's hope it's not that long til another British win. I will confess I was not a Murray fan after the England footie comment. I know believe that was taken out of context and blown up by the media and I am now a Murray fan. Go Andy, you've done us proud.
That's a very interesting post. I'm pleased because he is British, but at the end of the day he is a Scotsman, so slightly mixed emotions. I was thrilled to bits when he won gold at the Olympics, but that was under the GB banner. I would be interested to hear the Scottish point of view.
There's no one more patriotic about being English than me.....................but I can honestly say that, had Henman won it I would never have thought an "Englishman" has won it, I would have said a "British" player has won it!! I was cheering for him as he's BRITISH. The crowd on centre court didn't give a monkey's whether he was Northern Irish, Welsh or a Scot..........he is a British winner of Wimbledon. Fantastic performance from Andy.....truly a world class player.
First, the Lions ( too good, well done ), then Andy Murray, ( another great effort ), next .......... the Ashes. Oh well, as Meatloaf once sung, "two out of three ain't bad" ( even though you are playing complete inexperienced greenhorns ) ........... hopefully, with 'Boof' as coach, he can fire them up to at least be competitive, maybe even snare one or two games? Hopefully, coming down to the decider, it will be a good series for all of us.
Well done, Andy Murray. He proved himself at the highest level when he won the US title but the pressure on him to take Wimbledon must have been massive, and he showed he was more than up to it. I'm not much a fan of all the Henmania and Murraymania, flags sticking out of hats etc and a partisan crowd that applauds the opponents errors. I used to watch Henman impartially as I did Murray yesterday. Besides which I'm a great fan of Djokovic, both as an man and a sportsman. But there's no doubt the best player won on the day. Murray will get a knighthood, but please, leave it until the end of his career. In my view, Chris Hoy and Bradly Wiggins got them too early. If Murray gets the gong now, umpires may be obliged to call him Sir Andrew on court! Let him finish his career first
Kerry... not the slightest bit of difference, it was a fantastic performance in unbelievable conditions and under extreme pressurre.....to turn the question around....did it make any difference to you that McIlroy, McDowell and Clarke are from the North when they won their Majors or did you celebrate because they are Irish.........same difference?
just watched the game again, fantastic win. fully deserves a knighthood based on the previous criteria....! Personally think he deserves it. he just beat the best player on the planet. the joker is a machine and a great sportman. I cannot wait for the next match between these 2. I reckon he'll make Murray pay ! I saw murray win out in Brissie last year and it was blatantly obvious what Ivan Lendl has done for him. great man in the background and fantastic coach. So much of Murrays improvement is down to him. Massively proud to se Muray win (even if he's a Scot). I never thought I would see it in my lifetime !
Have to add, I honestly thought that the summer of 2012 could not be bettered, but we arre now someway to improving on that, first the Lions, then Murray.....next the Ashes......here's hoping......keep it going it is a joy to behold and the sun is shining as well........
I heard Lendl on the radio. He was really impressive and fully deserves some of the credit but probably not as much as Judy Murray. The shampoo / hairspray advert also gets some credit for keeping Andy happy too.
Judy Murray played a massive part in both her sons' tennis careers, so it seemed strange that initially Andy forgot to thank her when he climbed up to the box. I guess it's the professional team that mean everything when you get to the heady height of challenging for the major titles...family get left behind. Speaking of family, anyone note how Marion Bartoli snubbed her (I assume) stepmother who was standing next to her father in the box when Bartoli climbed up after her victory on Saturday?
Yes I noticed that Goldie, It was quite embarrassing to even watch it. The step mum held out her arms to embrace Marion and she just turned her back on her. The stepmum was left in one of those very awkward 'I've been blanked, what do I do now?' situations.
