I was watching The Football League Show on the weekend as is my want, and I was intrigued to hear that Andy Hessenthaler (Gillingham) was noted for being sent off as manager in a game against Cardiff City, only to re-appear as a player (substitute) later in the game.
Unless I`m wrong, he was sent off as a player in a 0-5 defeat, and then sent off in his capacity as player - manager from the dug out. Help me out team please?

    September 2003.

On Saturday Gill's boss Andy Hessenthaler was sent off from the bench for "leaving his technical are". Seconds later he appeared donw the tunnel and came on as a substitute.

There was many a question raised as to the legality of his actions. He also received a yellow card in the second half, another would have seen him sent off twice in the same game.

The FA have cleared up the matter saying he was allowed to come back on the pitch

    statement from the FA Website
"This was possible due to the fact that he was sent from the dug-out for a technical issue, rather than a more serious offence such as abusive language or violent conduct which could be charged under The FA's disciplinary regulations"
