I WAS out in Barbados this week and ran into Stoke City chairman Peter Coates and he spoke glowingly about the fantastic job that Tony Pulis has done – so it is no surprise that he is in the frame to take charge of Wales.
Wales are due to play Costa Rica next month in a memorial game in honour of the late Gary Speed and Tony has admitted he’d love to be in charge – for that game only.
However, I think that Tony is too young and too ambitious right now to be taking the Wales job full-time, which I am sure this move will prompt talk about.
I think that he will be full of pride if he does get the chance as it’s a wonderful opportunity, and so he should be, but whether he has any plans on doing it full-time I wouldn’t be so sure.
Whether he could do the job on a part-time basis we would have to wait and see but I personally don’t think those types of deals work, when a manager has to split their time between club and country.
I just think that with the job Tony has done at Stoke, he is only just getting going and he is far from finished with the Potters.
I think he is enjoying himself too much and why shouldn’t he be with Stoke now a strong Premier League club and going great guns in Europe too.
I think he enjoys the day-to-day running of club football, the week-to-week involvement of pitting your brains against the Premier League’s big clubs.
So I would be really surprised if he was to become a full-time Wales manager anytime soon.
I do think that in the future that is something that Tony could end up doing because he has proved what a good manager he is, but is it right for him now? I would guess no as he still has some unfinished business in the Potteries.
