I am pleased to see that Andy Frampton has currently been given the club captain duties...http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/sport/2012/august/6/andy_frampton.aspx? My own personal choice as a supporter would have been between him and Charlie Lee. I believe the captain should follow in the spirit of the manager Martin Allen, a no nonsense character. I know Framps has his critics but for the new season ahead, I believe we should get behind him in our new look tactics. 1) Apart from asking how fans feel about this (role as club captain)? 2) I would also ask what your thoughts are to him playing at a possible left back role? Once Essam returns, I assume Connor and Flanagan will take up the centre back roles. Leaving only the left back position available. Although I would personally like to see this tried and tested (Framps at left back) the only one doubt I have in my mind is regards to whether the role is played out as a wing back. If so does Framps have the pace to maintain such a position if Martin Allen does not bring in any wingers (combined answer with question 2. above)? One final question... 3) Can Flanagan play at left back, as I thought I read somewhere he can play any position? Thoughts please? (to encourage debate, may I please ask - no one liners, constructive team debate only and no repetitive responses)
The impression I got is that Frampton is club captain but not team captain? I don't know if that makes any sense but I feel Lee will be given captain duties on field whilst Frampton will be the captain off the pitch. Good set up if it is the case but don't feel Frampton could be the out and out captain this season because he is simply not good enough to start every match. As you have already said the only position he will be able to play is LB but surely Martin is a better LB at this level. Plus if you played frampton out wide teams that have wingers (e.g. anyone but us) will tear him apart for pace. Probably a nice guy and was a great player in his day but feel, in a similar way to Lawrence, his legs have gone and with that his Career.
Your right about Frampton being "club captain" as distinct from team captain. If my memory serves me correct I think Ian Cox and later on Mark Bentley were both given that role. I would say that this means that Frampton is not a definate starter every week, so that may go to Charlie Lee if he cleans up his act or Stuart Nelson who was captain at Notts County. I thought Framps was quite effective as left wing back at Dover but that was against a non-league side, so Ma may pick and choose the teams Framps plays against.
gfclukey - accurate assessment. I think we'll get ripped apart if Frampton is at left back ( as happened last season ) I think he might be 'ok' @ centre back - but nowhere else. As for team captain - not vocal enough - and as he was so poor ( too many times ) last season, he didn't inspire confidence in the backline - and we ended up conceding lots. I am prepared to support him @ the start of the new season - but if he ( or anyone else ) is not good enough - they need to go.
Frampton is 32 and not going to get any better in fact he will only get worse. Anyone who went to Wimbledon away last season will know how he can get the run around at left back when faced by nippy attackers. He has good attitude and probably has all the qualities needed to be club captain so long as he does not play too often but there is no real role for club captain at league 2 level. Talking to the prawn cocktail brigade before a match is not really needed at this level. The trouble is that Allen will remember him from his Brentford days and he ain't like that any more. Problem looming.
The only thing I really take from this is that Allen will not give Framps an immediate starting role. He probably wanted to try Frampton out at left back against Dover to see what he would be like there, but I would have thought Mad Dog still sees him as a centre half.
It was Lawrence at left back who got the run around at Wimbledon. Frampton was in the middle, and the winger that Lawrence was marking just kept knocking the ball beyond him and running post him.Hess finally came to his senses too late and took him off
BRB - sorry mate but as long as we both try to hide from the fact, Joe Martin will in fact be playing at left back this season. Fully agree with the notion that Frampton now as club captain will not necessarily be the first name on the teamsheet. I think if we can keep him, Essam, Davies and Flanagan around then that's a good basis for a solid defence. My problem remains with the full backs. Fish is looking better and a starting berth will give him more confidence, but he's still susceptable at defending.
A back four of Fish - Flannagan - Frampton/Essam - Martin is strong enough and quick enough to succeed at this level. Last season´s problems at the back were down to management organisation rather than individual players´lack of quality.
No it wasn't vinney. I was behind the goal that wimbledon attacked in that first half with a perfect view of how they were formatted and Lawrence only lasted for about 20 mins and carried the can for Frampton's poor performance (although it was hard to feel sorry for him after he had fallen on his rs to give them their second goal). After that I think Jackman went left back and Frampton moved across to the Lawrence vacancy. But Frampton was a yard behind play the whole game whereas Lawrence, despite his horrendous error had at least been combative.
To be honest I am not sure what the club captain role is, to me is just seems a tokenistic position in order to appease a player who you remove from team captain, all seems a little pointless to me. As for the idea of making Lee captain I find that laughable, your need your captain to be disciplined as well as a leader, Lee maybe one but certainly not the other! Personally I feel Jackman or Payne would be a better bet. I think most peope have spotted that Frampton would be too slow for the fullback position. I still feel that both Evans and Martin would be able to do a job for us if they have some support for midfield or the centreback (depending on system)
Like a lot of people, I think giving the captaincy to Charlie Lee will give him more maturity in his game and think more about his own discipline. Martin Allen is a massive fan of Charlie and I would be massively surprised if he isnt leading the team out tonight and when the season starts
The club captain role is meant to be one where the player acts as a representative of the playing staff to the coaching staff. Frampton has a lot of experience and it would be deconstructive to discard his words as a leader in the changing room, yet he isn't good enough to be given a starting role whether that be centre back or left back. Through this he could still advise the likes of Essam and Davies not to mention the new captain. If Charlie Lee is picked as captain (I hope he is) I feel he could energise players on the pitch but still have a decent input through displaying his own abilities. This is unlike when Fuller was picked as captain because he was playing his socks off beforehand but spent too much of his time marshalling the back line and screaming in a high pitched voice to play his own game.
