According to Blunderside during the game yesterday they said that we previously had the chance to sign Andy Carroll for £400K but we thought he was a bit raw at the time and didnt want to spend that much on an unproven player, if only we took the gamble.
Yeah I knew wetried to get him on loan but never knew (if true) that we coul of bought him for £400K
£35m for Carroll FFS - worth £5m tops. £20m for Jordan Henderson (the worst player in the England U21 side in the summer) and £20m for Downing who flatters to deceive in an England shirt. Super Kenny will come under mounting pressure after his honeymoon period if his £100m signings fail to do the business. The miserable git wasn't happy in the post match interview on LFC TV that's for sure. Never liked him when he was so disingenious in their 3-2 FA Cup win at BP back in 1989.
He was on loan for Preston and played against us, I'd heard some hype about him but he was very average looking back then, probably would have been a gamble for 400k
its only over the last 18 months he's become good, before that he was just a tall young player with stupid hair and a drinking problem.
It makes you wonder what the reaction of the fans would be to paying those type of transfer fees for those type of players. I bet if it was anyone else other than Dalglish in charge the kknives would already be being sharpened at Anfield. Rooney and SAF have said they expect them to challenge more this season which they could well do but at the same time things can just as easily go tits up.
I think they're paying lots because they're signing proper proven players rather than random spaniards like Benitez used to. Henderson and Carroll are expensive due to their age. They're only going to get better.
Carroll had half a good premier league season. Hardly proven. Henderson isn't as good as he's been made out to be either. If Henderson is worth £20mill then I expect Modric to go for around £50mill.
As it's Chelsea he probably will. As for Carroll, he's clearly a quality player. Have you seen some of the goals he scores with that ridiculously strong left foot? A target man who is also mobile and can shoot like that, he's got the lot.
For less than £35mill the premier league has seen torres join liverpool, henry join arsenal and shearer join newcastle. Carroll is nowhere near as good as any of those. He'll get better for sure but he'll never be mentioned in the same breath. Paid way too much.
Shearer joined Newcastle just after I left Uni - I'm 36 now. Carroll on paper has the lot. Henderson (for me) the jury is out. Have a few mackem mates pleased at that fee.
You're being kind, he was shocking. Indeed we were offered him by Allardyce but I was told it was for 650k, which we refused and he went to PNE. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the way he played for Preston that season it looked at the time like Brown made the right decision.
