Businesses 'should help prisoners get work'

Major employers should give prisoners work experience placements and training and help more ex-offenders get work, Ken Clarke has said.

The justice secretary said firms like Virgin and Marks & Spencer could hire ex-offenders without damaging their reputation and values.

At a reception for companies in Downing Street later this month, he will argue that prisoners can be highly motivated.

Ministers are launching a new scheme to improve prisoners' job prospects.

"Introducing work experience and training to people who are serving their time and being punished in prison is altogether a more intelligent way of running the prison service," Mr Clarke said.

This country gets dafter by the day, sod the rest of the unemployed, you know, the law abiding ones

I've known quite a few offenders given another chance via employment. Give the offenders jobs at Eton or other posh school/universities. Then wait for the outcry.

I'm all in favour of giving offenders a second chance, looking after them and doing all we can to stop re-offending. My problem is at a time of growing unemployment we seem, of Ken seems, to be giving out the wrong message or maybe a good message but at the wrong time.

In Sunderland, on the old Vaux site, the council are spending a couple of million on turning it into a car park and some shrubs. That is until the economy picks up and they can sell it.

Now they have huge diggers there, a couple of blokes flattening the land etc.

Rather than that why has this not become a youth offender project? You could have groups of these offenders off the streets, shovel in hand. Also offer people work experience who are long term unemployed some work on there. Call it a social project.

Law abiding citizens first , last and always before ex cons ho will just go back to a life of crime even if they have a job. Ask a probation office how many he sees as young offenders who end up in prison. It is most of the people he sees

Timing could be better but then there is never 100% of people in work, so you could say, anytime would be a bad time.

I dont see anything wrong with it though, and I am unemployed, if it gives them respect for others property, gives them a job to do and gives them some cash (they wont be on min wage obviously so it will be cheap labour i would presume) and respect for themselves then fine.

I have been on a back to work program course for the past 2 weeks. I done my C.V like they said, change it for every job I apply for, which i done anyway, Showed them my C.V they said it was great, applied for a Job (i have applied for about 30 but just taking 1), They gave me a mock interview yesterday, I blew him away, he was lost for words 4 times during it, I spent 7 hours the night before researching the company on the net.

Problem is in real life, I dont even get passed the C.V stage, still 2 weeks to hear about this job, but its not looking good atm, its one I really want hence the research, I couldnt do that much research on 15 jobs a week, so you have to prioritise.

A prisoner just walking into a job, without any c.v etc would probably piss me off, esp if it was a job i was going for, after I done all that ^^ anyway, but as an idea and reforming them i dont have anything to say against it.

Every time Big Ken opens his gob, he puts his foot in it. Youd think he would / should have learnt his lesson by now. seems not.

Does that mean a time served ***** can end up with job t the local public baths, that's the road we'll be going down, these people have no rights once they commit a crime, wil you find a 'former' terrorist with a clening job in the houses of parliament when they come out of jail?

Well they will still have to go through a CRB check or equilavent, so a peado will never be able to work with Children etc etc which is what happens now with X cons for sometimes their whole life (depending on how bad the crime was)

Some of the bile falls through the net, after change of identity, Robert Thompson or John Venebles for instance

They still know who they are though, for the most serious crimes, John Venebles would never be able to work with kids even if he changed his name 1000 times.

I dont for one moment think the Venables/Thompson criminal will be the ones Ken is thinking of and I'm sure there are many prisoners who deserve and would make good use of a second chance, that's not my problem.

My problem is any type of positive discrimination that is at the expense of people like Steve.

So you believe he was referring to a one time only, petty crook, full of remorse type criminal......and his words were just miss-judged?

I have no idea who he was referring to, doubt he knows, they dont seem to have that much of a clue about the real world but enjoy their headline grabbing daft ideas.

Maybe Steve should wrap in his 2 week course and rob a shop, .
