Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers has held talks with Kop favourite Gary McAllister about joining his backroom staff.

The former Anfield midfielder is under consideration for the role of first-team coach which has been vacant since the Reds parted company with Mike Marsh last month.

Rodgers met McAllister on Wednesday for discussions but no decision has yet been taken with other candidates also in the running,

The manager is looking to make one final appointment to his backroom staff having already brought in Sean O’Driscoll as assistant manager and promoted Pepijn Lijnders from the Academy to the newly created position of first team development coach.

McAllister would certainly be a popular appointment among supporters. He joined the club at the age of 35 during Gerard Houllier’s reign in 2000 and was instrumental in Liverpool winning an historic treble a year later.

He scored nine goals in 87 appearances over two seasons before moving into coaching. McAllister managed Coventry City and Leeds United before spells on the backroom staff at Middlesbrough and Aston Villa.

Another names rumoured as under consideration are Hyypia, Fowler and Mcmannamann. There is certainly a theme going here....

Fowler has done work to get qualified.

Not sure about mcmanaman... he's a more serious dude but still left on a free so he's lucky in my book to be getting anything

Hyppia is a legend.... fans would sing his name over Rodgers any day. It will never happen
