In rather unexpected news, Roker Report were informed by a source close to the club late last night that young midfielder George Honeyman is wanted by Sheffield Wednesday, and that a deal is currently being discussed between the two sides. With relegation officially confirmed following our 2-1 defeat at the hands of Burton Albion over the weekend, Championship clubs will no doubt be circling round our squad looking to pick up bargains. However, with regards to Honeyman, it is thought he caught the eye of the Hillsborough club many months ago and that they have been eyeing the player for quite some time. It would be a surprise if Chris Coleman allows the 23-year-old to move away from the Stadium of Light, especially after talking him up for months since his arrival, and even going as far as stating that he wished he could “bottle” the attitude of the Prudhoe-born academy product before earmarking him as a potential candidate as a future Sunderland captain. However, was Coleman’s lavish praise merely an attempt to make sure Honeyman’s head wasn’t turned? The truth is, with money tight, a half decent bid from Wednesday is likely to at least force a discussion between clubs such is our alleged financial plight - regardless of whether Coleman sanctions the transfer or not. please log in to view this image Will Coleman have a say in potential sales? Photo by Nigel Roddis/Getty Images Joining the club as a ten-year-old, Honeyman graduated from the Academy of Light under the tutelage of Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, but broke into the the first team late, only making his full league debut last February in a 2-0 defeat at West Brom. However, since his first team introduction the youngster has never looked back, becoming one of the only chinks of light in a dark and depressing season. TURN INSIGHTS INTO ACTIONS. Want to put all your data to work? Break through data silos and get to the right insights, so you can make more confident ... Despite some detractors, he has performed admirably throughout his debut season under supremely difficult circumstances. Chipping in with half a dozen league goals despite playing in numerous positions across Sunderland’s midfield, his work rate has been far above any other player in our ranks and he has quite rightly been one of the first names on the team sheet - firstly for Simon Grayson, and more recently under Chris Coleman. There have also been strong rumours that, despite his inexperience, the dynamic midfielder has taken on a leadership role within the squad after being allegedly frustrated with the lack of desire from his fellow Sunderland players. With boss Chris Coleman committing his future to the club again following relegation, it would be a big surprise to see Honeyman leave without a fight from him - a manager who has consistently talked up the credentials of the player and spoke about building a team around him. please log in to view this image Will Sunderland cash in on young George? Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images That said, with a squad desperate for new faces and an injection of some kind of transfer kitty, that choice may not be afforded to the former Wales boss, as CEO Martin Bain may just pull the rug from under the feet of Coleman and sanction the move. The fact that Sheffield Wednesday are rumoured to be confident of landing the 23-year-old would suggest that Martin Bain certainly hasn’t been unwelcoming to their alleged advances. It would also greatly undermine the role of Chris Coleman if he is allowed move on - showing even more evidence that cost cutting and reduction of Ellis Short’s debt is paramount and takes precedence over the restructuring of the actual playing staff, which is so desperately needed. Despite some inconsistencies, Honeyman has no doubt been one of our better players this term, and seems to have the attitude and ability that our boss is looking for. If Martin Bain and Ellis Short are still at the club come August and they are serious about wanting to compete or even mounting a promotion challenge at the first attempt of asking, entertaining the idea of selling one of our only reasons to remain positive would show yet another frustrating level of ineptness from the very top... then again, how many of us would really be that surprised?
We’ll probably agree to loan him - give them a buy option - paying 1/2 his wages so that Wednesday can “try before you buy” . More important to look after and make things easy for other clubs
Again it appears one of our brighter stars that not so long ago was saying how great it is playing for the club who brought him through from a child and appears as soon as another club comes sniffing around then the bags are packed and off they go. Now I'm not saying George is going as this is only a rumour at present but he's a young lad guaranteed first team football next season albeit in a lower division and because of the state our club is in we appear unable to stop this sort of thing happening. It doesn't augur well for the future when our bright sparks might be off and a certain Mr Rodwell sits tight and takes our money. It's going to be a tough summer.
Indeed - here it begins. The club will do what Ellis Short tells them to. He wants to reduce the debt to assist with the sale, and he couldn't care less about the mere matter of football. Honeyman McNair Gooch £10m - £15m off the debt straight away
Honeyman 1m - 1.5m Gooch 750k McNair 1.75m - 2m Whereabouts are you getting 10m - 15m from with them three players? We are a league one club, our players are worthless now.
Midway between the two I reckon. Honeyman and McNair I reckon would be a few million each (£3-4m) but those aside it's hard to see much from your current first team. Even Asoro, Maja, Gooch, etc. are either unproven at Championship level or hardly pulling up trees - couple of million each maximum. This will all be overshadowed by what players like N'Dong, Lens, Khazri, Djilobodji, Borini, Kone bring in as I can't see any of those playing for you again. Could be £30m there?!?!?
Roker Report were informed by a source close to the club late last night that young midfielder George Honeyman is wanted by Sheffield Wednesday, It was the Sun on Sunday which reported it Poor form from RR that. Become a ****ing **** house rag wannabe. I ****ing reported it before RR did last night and the story had been running all day.
Wigan and Blackburn went down and there highest transfer fees received were £300k and 500k. Wigan gave 8 free transfers and Blackburn gave 4 free transfers plus both clubs releasing players. Oxford received the highest fee for a player which was 2.6m, Marvin Johnson to Boro. A Rotherham player went for 1.6m, and after that there were a couple of 700k transfers and a couple of 600k transfers, a load between 100k and 300k, but mostly free transfers. Players values drop massively with this relegation, and I think that 5m for those 3 players would be the absolute limit.
Ah well you clearly have been looking at this more closely than me! I'm surprised the fees drop off that much but I guess that's just the situation you now find yourselves in. Still suspect the players currently away from the club should be able to bring in enough money alongside the parachute payments that you will not be forced to sell off current first teamers for peanuts.
