Recently some of you sent in your favourite music tracks to take with you to Deadman's Island. I was wondering what you think about football songs and which ones do you think are good / bad? Also any other songs that have a connection or memory relating to football matches. I remember freezing up on the terraces in the 60's and all stamping our feet to the Dave Clark Five's "Glad all Over' and 'Bits and Pieces' just to keep warm. For longevity if nothing else, I admire Robin Hall & Jimmy Macgregor's 'Football Crazy' which was released in 1960 and still gets airplay even today.
Actual songs featuring footballers have generally been rubbish, the first one I can recall is Back Home, then the Scotland one about Allys Army which must have been for the 78 world cup then in the 80s there were loads, a trend possibly started by Chas and Dave and Spurs, who were also responsible for the attrocious Diamond Lights care of messrs Hoddle and Waddle (better footballers than singers). Then in the 90s we got actually got a couple of decent football songs (and I am not talking about the Gillingham Blues), New Orders world in motion and Three Lions (only spoilt David Baddiel proving the comedians are no better at singing than footballers), but if ever a football song resonated the supporters that was the one. I went to England v Scotland at Euro 96 and this was sung constantly by the crowd as we left also amended to Scotlands Going Home! The other song that always reminds me of football, is Chumbawmbas Tub Thumping played at Wembley after we beat Wigan in the play off final it just seemed so apt after what had happened the year before.
Yet again OIT another difficult category you put before us but maybe slightly easier than the previous one for me personally. There are very few people in football I hold in high regard with Brian Clough probably being the highest. The ole big head he may have been but he stood for a lot of what I believe in football today, all though regrettably tainted with the million pound transfer market. However, this was to be rewarded with one of Cloughie's greatest accolades. Yet for the music I look to Bobby Robson and another manager I have high regard for and one that should have won the world cup if we only knew how to take penalites, so in respect to the only decent manager we have ever had since 1966... OK guys, I think the limited response to the thread shows a general low regard or even disinterest in soccer songs. Have to agree that the 90's produced probably the best of the bunch, starting of course with the theme for Italia 90.
