Maybe?. Uncertainty surrounds the future of Gordon as Sunderland close in on a free transfer swoop for Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood. Despite interest from Manchester City, Wolves and Everton, Westwood has been sold on a move to the Stadium of Light by the promise of starting the season as number one, and that leaves question marks surrounding Gordon. The former Hearts man will not be fit for the start of the season after undergoing an operation on a knee injury and Sunderlandâs decision to delay contract talks leaves him vulnerable. It emerged over the weekend that Celtic, who appear unlikely to lure Newcastle Unitedâs Fraser Forster back to Celtic Park next season following his successful loan spell last term, are keeping tabs on his situation. Arsenal have also watched him recently, while cash-rich Manchester City, in the market for a high-calibre back-up for Joe Hart, have Gordon on their radar. But Bruce says he is keeping an open mind on the goalkeeper situation, with Trevor Carson also set to get a chance in the Black Catsâ pre-season campaign. He said: âIâm going to swim with the goalkeepers until we get back and then weâll see where we are up to with Craig,â he said. âWeâre back on July 6, so weâve got nearly seven weeks once weâve come back to see where he is and where his rehabilitation has taken him and if heâs going to be a long term casualty. âBut Iâm not going to do anything just yet. Remember weâve also got back-up in Trevor Carson â he is a confident goalkeeper.â Read More http://www.journallive.co.uk/safc/s...rget-for-celtic-61634-28867078/#ixzz1P9Llbcfh
Back to the OP. I am a big Gordon fan but sometimes you just get the feeling it was not meant to be. A sticky first season then injuries ruin the rest of his time with us, maybe a move would be best for everyone and Celtic would seem ideal. I think any thoughts of number 2 at City are an insult.
With Man City & Arsenal rumoured to be interested we could get a good sale out of Gordon if it's true that his futures in doubt. I wouldn't be too fussed if he left to be honest, never been a massive Gordon fan although credit where credits due, 'that' save at the SOL last season was the best I've ever seen at a live match.
With the Westwood story flying about, this seems to make sense. Don't know if Celtic can afford him, or pay high salaries. But as for Cities no.2 well they've got a canny one already.
Gordon's injury problems are a real worry, and if we are going to sell him, we could lose a sack full of money on the deal unless he can prove that he is clear of these injuries.
Seems like a few local papers have picked up on this story... STEVE Bruce has spent the summer worrying about the paucity of strikers at Sunderland, but will soon have quite the opposite problem at the other end of the pitch. The Black Cats are set to sign Coventry goalkeeper Kieren Westwood when the Republic of Ireland international’s contract expires at the end of the month, added to Craig Gordon, Simon Mignolet and Trevor Carson already at the club. With Mignolet’s ascension to first-choice for Belgium since his summer signing from Saint Truidense, Westwood’s addition will mean that Sunderland could boast three international goalkeepers when the season begins on August 13. Such strength in depth between the sticks is reminiscent of 2002-3, when Sunderland, then rock bottom of the Premier League, had Mart Poom, Thomas Myrhe, Jurgen Macho and Thomas Sorensen at their disposal. But it is unlikely that Bruce will opt to keep all four, looking to either cash in on Gordon, whose contract expires next year, or Carson, who has been at the club since 2004 but has not made a first-team start. With 26-year-old Westwood is expected to challenge Mignolet for the number one spot, Bruce may even choose to offload both Gordon and Carson, promoting young prospect Jordan Pickford to the reserve team in their defence of their Premier League title. Bruce will take his time over the tough decision, with Sunderland’s first pre-season fixture more than a month away, against York City at Bootham Crescent on July 13. Meanwhile, Sunderland reiterated at the weekend that Gordon will not be fit for the start of the season, despite the player’s confidence that he would be “there or thereabouts” in August. And Bruce said: “We’ve got back-up in Trevor Carson, we’re pretty confident that he is a decent goalkeeper so we’ve got back-up in that respect.
Be sorry to see the lad go, but sometimes you have to cut your losses, and his injury status aint good right now, so it may be farewell, and another club may get a bargain, and Gordon might make a few bob, but the opposite could happen, but whichever way it goes, wish him well.
I think he's been desperately unlucky with his injuries, and if we can give him some extra time this summer and not feel like we have to rush him back (with Mig and Westwood) then we can get him completely fit again. The thought of swapping a completely fit Gordon as number 1 with Westwood, with no PL experience, terrifies me. However the question will always be 'if' we can get Gordon completely fit again. If we can, he's got to stay as our number 1, as he is truly top-class. Interesting if Brucey feels the same though? He knows he can't keep three top keepers happy, Mig is young with bags of potential, and Westwood is likely to be joining with thoughts of first-team football. If Gordon does come back fit and all guns blazing, I'd fear it would still be him to go?
A fit, on form Craig Gordon is genuinely one of the best goalkeepers in the premiership. No exaggerations. His problem is his presence in the box when coming for corners and he's not a keeper who seems to be yelling orders to the defence or generally communicate with them. It would be a shame to see him go because he could be world class but he just seems to break limbs more times than 'arry does 'dodgy transfers'!! Speaking of Westwood has anybody actually seen him play? Is he good enough for the premiership?
