FA Cup-winning hero Jimmy Montgomery has been appointed as Sunderland's first official Club Ambassador. Jimmy, famous for his match-winning double save in the 1973 FA Cup Final, widely acknowledged as the greatest save ever seen at Wembley, made a record 627 appearances for the club. A firm favourite with supporters of all generations, the legend's new role will see him attend events and functions on behalf of the club, as well as meeting and mingling with guests in the stadium's hospitality areas on matchdays. SAFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: "I can think of no better person to represent the club than Jimmy. The word legend can often be overused but it's the perfect description for Monty. "He is quite simply Sunderland through and through and is held in such high esteem and affection by supporters and everyone here at the club. He is a true gentleman, a hugely respected figure in the football world and we are delighted and honoured that he has agreed to take on the role of Club Ambassador." Manager Martin O'Neill, who played alongside Jimmy at Nottingham Forest, added: "I wholly endorse the comments made by Margaret. I had the pleasure of playing with Jim when we were both managed by Brian Clough. He was just one fantastic person - and a magnificent goalkeeper as well!" A leading light of Sunderland's Former Players Association, Jimmy will continue to lead his hugely popular 'Legends Tours' at the stadium, along with writing his exclusive column in Sunderland's award-winning matchday programme.
Absolutely, the right man for it. Monty is always involved in anything with the club, charity, public speaking, anything. He's perfect for this kind of role.
Did you see him on FF said he probably should have caught the first shot but said we still wouldn't be talking about it 39 years later.
