On the Liverpool section of BBC Football, there's an interview with Gerard Houllier regarding Stewart Downing. He gives SD a great deal of praise in terms of both his footballing ability and his attitude to the game. He also raises the point that Downing als also happy playing on the right of midfield.

Most people on here have the team set up with Downing on the left wing. Given the above, if he was palyed on the right, how would you change the set-up on the team? What different options would this give us?

    it all depends on suarez.

i think downing and suarez in iether a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 type set up would play wider and so would be natrual at switching sides in that case.

Much depends on how kenny sets out to use suarez, so unitl he gets back from copa america we really won't know for sure.

Doesn't really change much in my opinion, probably depends on the quality of the opposition fullbacks.
We could always put cole on the left i suppose

yes, again 442? cole elft downing right and they could switch. not very effective, you can put kuyt up top, or on the bench, maxi left or right.

Both Suarez and Downing can interchange. Suarez is versatile and can play anywhere along the front line.

Spot on.It doesn't matter where Suarez starts....he won't stay there. He can as you say play across the line and does too.

Kuyt and Benayoun used to swap wings all the time.

changing from right to left or left to right confuses opponent most.It is very good if a player can play in both position.<ok>

We'll probably be set up so that our full backs can swap as well.

Now, who was I trying to mark? <laugh>

I think we bought deliberately for that. Rafa was into versatility and that seems to be continuing.

Like people said we can swap the wingers around. One good way would be to play a 4-3-3 with a midfield of Adam, Lucas and Gerrard, and a front line of Dowing Carroll and Suarez. Downing would get the ball, cross it, flick from Carroll using his head to Suarez. Suarez slots it home.

Just a nice way to summarise all their strengths in one possible attacking combination :)

If we play with either a midfield four or a midfield three, don't expect them to stay where they started.
