I didnt go yesterday and I havent seen any other action but Jesus H - was he a pussy for their first goal or what? He was far too concerned with looking at their man rather than just going for a ball that was begging to be taken. He mustve been 70 / 30 favourite to get that. Sorry if that has been discussed elsewhere, I couldnt be arsed to look.
It wasnt as bad as i imagined to be honest. I thought it was a great ball in. He should have definitely dealt with it. A Southall or a Schmeichel would have taken an ideal opportunity to punch the ball and batter the forward too. Saying that Chezzy was all at sea for the cross, if the cross had a been 3 yards farther out, Amos couldnt have come to for it and Helgusson woulda had an easy header.
I honestly thought it was a shocking lack of determination to win the ball and risk taking a bump for the team in the process. Ability doesnt come into it.
It's rather ironic that we have a thread like this from someone who didn't see the game, while on other threads ther are Cardiff fans saying that he's the best keeper they've seen this season. He obviously messed up for the opener, but he seems to have made up for it in the rest of the game and it wasn't the reason we lost.
Amos is doomed. People have been against him since Blackpool when he wasn't even at fault and now every time we concede people are going on about how we should have signed Mannone and we shouldn't have a young 'keeper bla bla. I'm not talking about BCC particularly but there is this general lack of appreciation for Amos around the stadium and particularly on the radio phone-ins, he's never going to be popular now.
I never said it was the reason we lost and I clearly pointed out that I hadnt seen any other action. He couldve made 10 worldies but it doesnt change the fact that he was at fault for this goal. Nowhere did I say he cost us the game, is a terrible keeper, we should get rid etc, etc - I said he was shocking for their first goal and I stand by that.
I think yesterday was his best game for us he made a couple of great saves from Whittingham free-kicks but like Mcshane you know there's a mistake itching to get out (like there first goal)! And on Mcshane why did he get taken of he was by far our best defender saved us twice Chester was having by far a worse game!
Bruce said he thought Amos was at fault, but he likes him and admits young keepers will make mistakes.. how are they going to develop otherwise? We're not Man U so we can't have all the best players in all positions. The stupid linesman who gave Simmo handball from 70 yards out when the ref didn't rule it out first cost us more because of the timing. We were on top up until HT.
Just seen the highlights - Amos should have at least punched the ball for the first goal, he wimped out big time. There weren't any other highlights of him making any saves either. Elmohamady fluffed a great opportunity, Simpson's goal should have stood - it even looks like the Cardiff defender handball's it into Simpson's path, if that's the case, we're really out of luck! Their second, it looks like Koren is fouled when they claim the ball back and Brady is out of position. Koren's goal was top class too. Overall the defending looked very suspect for both goals though - some very half-arsed performances to stop the ball - maybe to do with tired legs though?
Interesting stats in the Observer this morning - Amos ranked 2nd best stopper in the Championship with 54 saves (1st is Olejnik of Peterborough (67), 2nd= Kenny of TWS. No idea how they arrive at these figures mind. Given that apart from the Brighton and Blackburn GKs all the others are from bottom half teams, maybe the defence is more at fault than he is?
I do think this thread has become a discussion on if he's any good or not and that wasn't what I intended.
it's easy to pin all the blame on Amos when our defence were all at sea.. Cardiff should have been out of sight first half. Whittingham +1 other were unmarked and should have made it 2-0 early on. C'mon Hobbsy..
Time is limited and what people really want to see is everybody getting off the coach before the game, apparently.
Nicked off AN "Sorry, but that's the problem with trying to assess a full 90 minutes from a minute of incidents. Amos was absolutely abysmal. Not just for the first goal either - he was shaky, badly positioned and the defence had to go beyond their expected duty to bail us out a couple of times because he wasn't commanding or confident enough to deal with the danger. He did make saves, but of the type that a professional goalkeeper should make as a matter of routine." Just going with my gut feeling about Amos, i dont think he is quite ready for a season as number 1 with us. He's not very vocal and his kicks are terrible, out of hand or off the floor. Confidence does play a part with goalies, maybe a bit of self doubt has crept in. Whatever, I dont care about Amos, he's not our player. I'd like a new goalie in on a permanent.
