hola Ameobi is undeterred by the prospect of more competition for starting spots at Newcastle and intends to fight for his place.

Despite Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse being established as the first-choice pairing for the Magpies, Alan Pardew has still been linked with bids for Luuk de Jong and Andy Carroll this summer.

Although a new face on Tyneside seems inevitable, Ameobi is focused on nothing but preparing for his 13th season with the club.

"I'm sure (Pardew) is trying to bring more players in to get the competition for places and I'm sure that'll make the team stronger," he told the Newcastle Chronicle.

"But I've said to the manager I want to fight for my place again. He knows that. He expects me to do that."

    Excited

Ameobi made his debut for the club back in September 2000 and can expect to see plenty of action this season given the club's involvement in the Europa League.

And the 30-year-old cannot wait to build on last season's surprise fifth-place finish.

"We're really excited about this season," he added.

"Obviously, it was fantastic the way we finished last year, but we want to improve. The hard work starts now."

His goals & assists - particualrly as an impact sub - meant the difference between us and Everton last year. Everton aren't in Europe.

Statistics about his goalscoring record don't count in the fact that for years he played through injuries, when no-one else was available to lead the line. Genuinely loyal, team before self.

Pardew has gone on record, several times, saying that Shola is the most important player behind the scenes.

I hope he stays, ends his career at the Toon. Might not be the talent that Shearer, Milburn, or Supermac were, but he's a Toon legend nonetheless.

There is a role for him now, I think he is playing his best stuff for the club in his career. Never rated him and its been painful to watch over the years at times, but I thought he played the hold up role from the bench for 20mins extremely well last season. Always found him lazy but he was really putting himself about. Don't want to shed any others except Ranger/Xisco.

A Toon legend, a gentleman, a team player and a mackem slayer all rolled into one. Pure class.

"But I've said to the manager I want to fight for my place again. He knows that. He expects me to do that." Top man.

    Most European Appearances
    Shay Given - 54
    Alan Shearer - 49
    Aaron Hughes - 44
    Gary Speed - 39
    Shola Ameobi - 37

    Most European Goals
    Alan Shearer - 30
    Shola Ameobi - 12
    Craig Bellamy - 11

This season gives Shola an opportunity to cement his place as one of our best players in European competitions. I'm not even being silly here.

Lets say he gets a few appearances and bags a couple goals, statistically he'd be 4th (even 3rd!) in the appearances table and comfortably our 2nd highest scorer.

I think we can utilise him in Europe, allowing us to rest a striker for the league (which I believe should be our priority) without it being seen as 'fielding a weaker team'. He has his qualities and especially against teams not used to a physical style, he can be a real handful.

Not even going to comment on his recent statement, I have never doubted his loyalty and integrity for a second so this is not news. <ok>

And the Lord said "You must Rep Mod Face!" and so Obi did - and the angels sang.

But I say, do not resist rep! If someone reps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also (once it has been spread).
