they are all the same mate. Today the company I have worked 12 years for and I leave this week announced that in the first quarter they have delivered revenue of £943 million, a 16% growth . In the last 12 months they have acquired telecomms companies bringing in another £17m. The bastards took 10% off my salary during covid, I was a key worker, and I never got a penny of that back
They must have took around £2500 off me. On top of that I have company electric vehicle which I charge at home and they give me back my business miles. Prior to the hike, I was getting 4p a mile, after it I was getting 5p. My bills go up by over 200% I get 25%. We then get a 2% wage rise when inflation was around 6%, that is in fact a wage cut.
If the company reaches a certain target within 3 years following the aforementioned acquisitions, the CEO gets a bonus of £5.6million.He has robbed me and others to ensure he gets his bonus
I dont ever expect these big companies be bothered about the people they employ nor the people they serve.

    Excellent post mate.

Electricity bill is pissing me off. Was saying to the wife last night the whole country needs to take action and start a protest. Every night at a set time we all switch off the electric at the distribution box and read a book, play cards or even talk to each other for 1 hour. This would soon be noticed of it was on a large enough scale. They would notice power wasn't being used on the scale expected at that time but they would still be producing so potentially put them out of pocket. Unfortunately it would likely be few thousand at most and wouldn't make a blip.

On the side of subscriptions I have 3 with amazon, prime, music and audible and then Netflix. I use all of them quite a bit but really need to look at dumping some.

Think I'm going to get rid my virgin media TV package. Paying £95 a month and rarely watch normal TV. Going to sack that off and my landline and just stick with the broadband. If I want to watch TV I'll just use an iPlayer on my firestick.

Funny you mention that can I **** get it to work on my new firstick, upgraded to a new 4k one as I had a first generation one and it was ridiculously slow at responding.

Everything else works iplayer gets to a bit that looks like it's opening and won't go past that.

One thing I will say about prime is that you get a lot for your money. You get the films and TV shows, you get free delivery including next day when buying off there and access to amazon prime day (I waited for two amazon products I wanted and save £75 quid the other week).

We are defo ditching Netflix as we hardly use it, seriously looking at others too, we read a lot and that option is becoming more attractive by the day.
Most things on Tele are sh1te anyway so I wouldn't miss it at all.

my only subscription is amazon prime and that is simply because i buy quite a lot online and it actually saves me money in the long term, i rarely actually watch or listen as i found that anything i really wanted had to be 'hired' anyway, i sacked sky off a long time ago as the broadband was the worst i have had

i grew up with three channels on the tv that covered everyones needs but since the explosion of reality crap, cookery programmes and these 'seasons' it went balistic,
do we really need to have so many choices now, each costing extra?

this is the problem, those at the top make sure they are well looked after getting money for doing feck all that others have earned for them, you can almost guarantee that they know little to nothing about the business and will have managers running it all and the P.A. will do best part of the CEO's work anyway.

How does he get by? With that type of wealth he will either be a right boring bastard that just works all the time and hardly enjoys his money or he will be a complete wrong'un into all sorts <laugh>.

Seriously though billionaires are a different breed. Most of us would reach a few million, retire and enjoy the money. These guys keep working never mind how much they have. I know they are hardly doing hard labour but still!

back when the unions ruled and people got p1ssed off with all the strikes, before the tories had a long time in power and ruined the production side of our industries while taking out the unions (after a very succesful smear campaign in the media) those who went on strike really needed to get food on the table and pay the rent/mortgage although family and friends helped with the food and councils/building societies were willing to wait...these days they need the food and still need to pay rent/mortgage but also the majority have a mobile phone contract (must have a contract for the free minutes they get so they can use the phone a lot more than they need to because they HAVE to use those minutes up by making calls they dont need to) plus the phone contracts for their kids, most will also have prime, netflix, sky, bt and a few other subscription channels, a lot will also have xbox/playstation accounts for each kid, they will have the fastest internet they can get, many will have a new(ish) car that costs them each month, most likely will have started to pay for the next holiday abroad.

going on strike now for most will mean having to get rid of all of lifes 'extras' which, strangely enough, none of us had back in the late 70's and early 80's...my own opinion is that it will do a lot of them good to get rid of most of all that crap anyway...the problem is that 'we' allowed that government to basically destroy the working mans one means of standing up for themselves all because of the 'winter of discontent' and that is why we now sit here watching people get mega rich and giving themselves and their family/mates plenty while denying the rest a livable wage.

No such thing as minutes on a phone contract anymore mate, all that is pretty much unlimited. It's the Internet data they charge for these days as most people rarely make a call these days.

On the power side of that post, TBH night time usage is not really a problem. Peak demand, roughly 7am to 6-7 pm is the problem. Here and everywhere. We sometimes import Electricity from Europe, and, far less well known it seems, we sometimes export it. Quite a lot recently actually, as over 40% of France's nuclear ractors are on shutdown or reduced output.

The larger energy argument requires adults to be in charge, and to resist the mentalists of the green lobby who'd have us all ( but not themselves of course) living in mud huts with candles. This madness started around 2007 or so in earnest, though before then really, and it has continued unabated.

This I can predict with certainty:

Unless a change is made in energy strategy, which actually uses and makes the most of our still vast gas reserves and other fossil fuels, then planned outages- brownouts- are a certainty in the very near future. With or without a deranged nutter in Moscow running amok.

It's the price we are paying that is the problem. By October it looks like my bill is going to have increased by about 200% in about less than 12 months. Where are people expected to find another 200 quid a month?

Yep. Terrible. But one of the main drivers of the price rises over the time I mentioned has been the subsidy deals given to wind farms and solar power. 200% subsidy at one point on offshore windfarms. Solar at one point had very high subsidies too. This all went on to the bills.

The recent surge is more to do with the rocketing, worldwide demand for fuel. Oil, gas, coal are in unprecedented high demand which sets prices high. Production slowerd down during the pandemic, then demand catapulted, hence the price rises. Its a shortage of the stuff. Not made better by nutters in the White House savaging the oil and gas industry and closing down a huge pipeline. They are now buying the same stuff we are buying.

Some of this will abate. But not in a hurry, and not while the world is in a turmoil.

But as far as this country goes, price hikes on gas have been a political decision for at least fifteen years, probably more. There is more than enough gas to alleviate the price.
