Sunderland's stunning victory at Newcastle last weekend may have mollified many among those supporters disapproving of Paolo Di Canio's presence because of his fascist past, but it clearly cuts no ice with the Trades Union Congress.

The TUC have cancelled a training event planned for the Stadium of Light over fears members would not attend in protest against the new manager's arrival. "Trade union members have recently confirmed to us that they will not attend," says the North-east regional secretary, Kevin Rowan. "While there is no boycott in place, we were approached by a number of members indicating that they were unlikely to attend while it was at this particular venue as a direct result of the appointment of Di Canio. While the club have made that appointment for footballing reasons, they will fully understand the impact it has had in damaging the reputation of a club like Sunderland, which has such a strong reputation as a community club."

So political football scores again – this time from the left wing.

Give it a rest will ya - 2 wins out of 3. He has answered his critics for me (the fans) with the massive improvement on the football under MON.

A number of members have said they wouldn't attend ...so thats hooper and his mate ?. Just confirms that the TUC are full of small minded bigots. The rest of the real world has moved on.

Had this before. The TUC could **** off then and they can **** off now. Even if he IS a fascist, so what? Doesn't mean he supports Nazism any more than being a communist means you support Stalin's policy of mass murder in the 30s.

Like you say, we'll take the two wins and they can take a hike...

After watching pdc and how he always salutes the fans (not like that...), and genuinely seems to love them, you have to wonder... If he is fascist, guaranteed the majority of Sunderland fans are left wing, but he doesn't care? He didn't say, '**** I can't go there, they hold different political views to me.' Nope, he wants to go for football and football alone. The fans love football as much as he does, and that's all he cares about. **** these unionists, they've been crying since thatcher took their power.

    Spot on Sid.

These outdated and obsolete unions are so out of touch with reality on a day to day basis they probably think this is still a story with mileage they can use to their good effect.

Fact is with the emphatic derby win and again yesterday over another bogey team in Everton, this story has died on its arse. All the TUC are doing is alienating a vast section of its grass roots membership now here in the NE. If I were a union member, I'd cancel my affiliation with immediate effect over this pathetic announcement alone. Seems unions are only willing to accept communist, marxist members now and don't actually wish to represent working people with different political viewpoints. How sad.

Who are the ****ing bigoted, over the hill dinosaurs now then?

I am a left of centre political animal and yet I just don't see PDC's political views having any relevance at all? If he were standing for parliament under a right wing banner, then I'd campaign against it but he is a football manager FFS not a politician? I believe in freedom of religious, political and sexual beliefs and thought that Britain stood for that too.

Are the unions really saying that in 2013, the main representatives of working men and women in this country, absolutely reject those members that don't have pure marxist beliefs? If thats true then Unions are even more finished than I thought.

**** them and **** the TUC.

Ask any one of the 44,600 supporters at the SOL if they care about what the TUC thinks and I think you will get a resounding 'go **** yourself'

No - they want publicity, especially more so as they are now a total irrelevance in todays society. It is the last desparate thrashings of a dying beast.

My mate is a retired GMB official and a SAFC supporter.

He keeps saying PDC is a fascist and hoped SAFC were relegated (before the SCUM game) - what a f a n n y!!!

I had a great time wind him up on the golf course this morning - he still thinks he is a fascist despite everything that has been said.

Obviously the unions do not believe in being "innocent until proven guilty" - p r i c k s!!!!!

The lad doesn't go round spouting off. If he believes in something then thats up to him. He has kept a dignified silence unlike these fat beer bellied slobs who will take anything they would get as long as it was free. I.m in the CAFO. (CAN ALL **** OFF) group.

Stop giving them what they want. Sooner we stop talking about it, the sooner they've only got themselves to moan to.

    Why do they still exists?

Who pays their wages- no deep shaft mines in the North East?

Surely Scargill taking the miners out on strike without a ballot and then intimidating miners who needed to work(or have their ex couincil homes re-possessed, cute move Maggie) was the act of a dictator rather than a democratic process.
