I ask this as I am thinking of taking my youngest who is 8 to Millwall away, is it likely to be as unsafe as a rumored or are they just a bunch of pussy cats really and they live on reputation of their away following? any feed back would be good as I quite fancy going just a bit worried about the stories that get back to his Mum if it all kicks off.

I've been a couple of times and never had a problem, but you never know what might happen. It only takes a couple of idiots. Still, could happen anywhere so why not?

    Just don't wear your colours.

I've only been once, in 1973 as an 11 year old, to see us clinch promotion. Scared me ****less, have never wanted to return! Surely there are less stressful away games you could take him?

I wouldnt have taken him, Yeovil away was a great place to take young children, the locals were very friendly while trouble is almost guaranteed at millwall, the police will ensure that so they get their overtime.

Make sure you both wear a hat because it will protect you when the coins and debris start raining down on you.

I've been a few times, as a kid to the old ground and in our promotion season when we lost 0-2. Judging by the latter game, it attracts a different sort of rangers fan which pretty much guarantees something will happen. Like SB said, there are better away fixtures, surely. Having said that, trouble can flare at any time, so you just have to keep your wits about you.

.......and at Yeovil, I believe we were the ones with the blue flares, after learning those tricks from the Sheff Wed & Birmingham supporters at Loftus Road.

I think they were smoke bombs and there were a couple from the home end too, added to the atmosphere and totally different that coins and debris raining down on you and the police stopping you from seeking cover.

OP - are you being a bad parent? Simple answer, YES.

I wouldn't bring an adult there never mind a young child.

Okay, smoke bombs are likely much less dangerous than that blue Brummie flare that was tossed onto the pitch at Loftus Road, that could have possibly burnt someone had it not found it's mark.

To be honest Millwall away is the game I look forward to every year :).
But do you really want to put your boy through that s*** ? My 18 year old wants to go and I won't even take him.

Save the 'Away Day' experience for another day when you can both enjoy it properly.

Youre being a bit more blunt that me for once but I wouldnt bring a kid or a woman to that ground. You should basically go there expecting trouble and dont bring anyone that wouldnt be able to handle it. I went with my mate who left his 8yo behind.

We went once just for the experience and wouldnt do it again unless it was a promotion decider or playoff game.

Still, a flare is nothing compared to being round up with only a rickety fence keeping the fans apart, that fence was within seconds of being torn down and all hell would have broken loose. As it was, it was just lots and lots of debris being thrown both ways with nowhere for you to escape.

    You'll be fine.

Get there in good time and don't sit near either corner flags, this avoiding our own yoof who will be looking to get at their yoof despite a gap between the stands and 30ft of lower tier separating them.

The only time it might get genuinely 'tasty' is after the game when away fans get stupidly penned in outside rather than kept in the stand or let straight out. Just stay in your seat for an extra 15 mins and again all will be fine.

    It's not 1978 anymore.

Wouldn't go near the place myself, let alone take an 8 year old.

I went during our Championship winning season, and took the overground train from London Bridge. Opposing fans seem to mingle pretty well on the train (but I agree with the advice above not to wear colours with your boy with you, Ezwoldo). We were greeted by police with Alsatians (the dogs not the nationals) who filtered QPR fans (the police not the dogs) down a high metal -fenced passageway that was straight out of a George Orwell novel. The passageway goes directly to the ground, bleak on either side, and Millwall fans would have to risk getting impaled to get at visiting fans. QPR lost the match, large sections of the Wall supporters spending more time looking up and baiting us than focusing on the pitch. Back down the passageway, onto trains exclusively for QPR and the South London Constabulary. We had to walk past a barrage of abuse from Wall knuckle-draggers drinking outside the pub down to Borough High Street.

In all, a pretty depressing experience, but one that I think every football fan should sample once, if only to fully appreciate the genuine hospitality of other grounds.

What a load of nonsense. Those days have long gone

He'll be fine, things have changed. Theres a few grounds a lot worse than the Den for intimidation.

In life you get the odd oddball who will want to inflict pain on innocent individuals. Just as much chance of it happening on the bus, in the shopping mall or at a football ground.

I agree and if you go it will be character building for the lad

Millwall are believe it not are just human beings and better than some of the lads I have stood with at LR

I have been on a tube with a retro QPR top on with them and good as gold ...

Noisy thick and disfunctional and sometimes so are the away fans

If your lad wants to go then its great
If any fan swears at your lad ... Punch them as hard as you can and roll the dice
