    The plot thickens…

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/...rland-are-leading-the-chase-for-Jozy-Altidore

underland have made a move to land American star Jozy Altidore, Sky Sports understands.

The Black Cats have been busy in the transfer market already this summer, but they are looking to make further inroads and Altidore is very much on their radar.

Clubs from Germany and Italy are also looking closely at the 23-year-old, but it is the interest from England which is strongest, with Sunderland, and also Fulham, keen.

Altidore's American agent Lyle Yorks has confirmed that they are in advanced talks with an English club, without naming the team.

Of the English interest he said that they were "in advanced discussions with them."

Altidore, who has already had a spell in England with Hull City in 2009, enjoyed the best season of his career last term after scoring 23 league goals for AZ Alkmaar.

Now Sunderland are locked in talks as they hope to seal a deal for the coveted American, and it seems they are hoping to conclude the move this week.

Fully admit I have little knowledge of him after Hull, but I knew he was young whilst there

Says he scored a few since, and he cant be any worse than DG! Touch wood...

Like someone said on a previous thread, you would spend £5M on this lad anyday than £8M prospect from the Championship like Ince/Austin (Wickham!!!) etc

Aye but this lad was useless in the championship though (albeit a few years ago) and Ince, Austin and Wickham weren't.

Wickham hasnt been given a decent chance or run in the team imo.

DG 13 games and garbage and no goals. Would prefer him to get a chance than spend another £5 mil on another player.

Sunderland's initial offer for AZ Alkmaar striker Jozy Altidore has been rejected by the Eredivisie side.

Sky Sports revealed earlier on Tuesday that the Black Cats had made a move for the American forward as they continue to reshape their squad under new manager Paolo Di Canio.

But their opening bid has been knocked back by AZ, who have already banked 8 million euros after allowing Adam Maher to join PSV Eindhoven and are not under pressure to sell.

An AZ spokesman told Dutch press agency ANP: "A first bid was insufficient. We have let them know that. Now we have to wait."

Altidore, who has already had a spell in England with Hull City in 2009, enjoyed the best season of his career last term after scoring 23 league goals for AZ Alkmaar.

Sunderland must now consider whether to return with an improved offer for the 23-year-old, or turn their attention to alternative targets.

Isn't it funny that even when we know players are ****e, won't improve us and certainly not next level players. As soon as we are linked with them, they become superstars all of a sudden.

I think people are more likely to trust in our scouts who have years of experience and success behind them then run with the boo boys who judge this player purely based on a season he played when just a boy.

I think most of us have the intelligence to understand that young professional footballers develop quickly too.

The guy scored 31 times last season and 20 the year before. Forget about the 19 year old who had a hard team at Hull in the premier league when he was just 19 and thrust into a sinking ship.

I know the premier league is a way better standard than eredivisie but he has a better record than Betake and Lukaku did in Belgium which is a lower standard than Holland.

If the price tag is around 5m snap him up.

Altidore's never played in the Championship, he played for us in the Premier League and although he had a finish that made Heskey appear clinical, the rest of his game was fairly good. If he's added goals to his game (I know he's scored 38 in Holland, I mean in the Premier League) I think he'd be a very capable striker.

We cannot keep gambling with the if's and maybe's get Bent signed tomorrow and he will do it again for us I tell you, he was left out at Spurs and came here and look what he did, he can do it again he wants an England place, like defoe who could also come here.
