So there's been lots of talk about this recently and I heard the same suggestion three times yesterday on the radio.

The idea is to have a sudden-death penalty shoot-out after 90 mins. The winner of that has their noses in front - as if they had half a goal. 30mins of extra time is then played. If scores are still level the team who won the shoot-out wins. I actually heard the guy who claimed to have come up with this idea phone Radio 5 and tell the story of how he went to see people at UEFA or FIFA (accompanied by Ramon Vega!) and they really liked the idea.

Few hours later I heard this very idea being discussed in very approving ways by Tim Vickery (I think) and some other footballing journo on the BBC.

    What does anyone else think?

Any other ideas? I quite like the approach of taking a player off every five minutes but can see that this might lead to lots of unwanted outcomes (exhaustion if you're just gonna KEEP playing til someone scores, the fact that the Golden Goal thing didn't really work in the first place, that once you get down to two-a side is this really any more like football than penalties? And if you stop at, say, seven-a-side then will teams specialise in this?...).

In the event of a score draw the team that scored first wins.

In the event of a score draw then the team that won most corners wins.

    Simples.

Presumably the second one's a no-score draw, Spurfection.

Why should the team that scores first win?

Yup no score draw, thanks for pointing that out.

Someone has to so win so why not make give the win to the team that started out the more attack minded?

Scoring first doesn't necessarily mean that a team's been more attack minded.
Chelsea v Barcelona would be an example of the complete opposite.
You would also see the team that scored first shut up shop completely, knowing that they can afford to concede once and still win.

as for penalties i think the best format is the way it already stands...if deciding matches is what it is all about...for me this half a goal stuff just encourages teams like Chelsea to park the bus....and they dont need any further encouragement.

    poor idea...totally anti football.

parking the bus is negative however defending in itself is an art form just like attacking..i think this suggestion belittles the work a defence does in a team.

    Not really an alternative but...
Let the entire technical staff take the penalties and put the manager on goal.

I don't like the idea of counting anything like corners or shots on target. It would change the essence of the game too much. Players would play for corners in the first instance, take weak pot-shots from 30 yards out in the second. It would be a different game.

Which begs the question; How is the Manager to get on the goal ?. Is it to be by;-
Hoist; Step Ladder; Shot out of a cannon; Trampoline; Pole Vault or Pogo Stick dec'd out in team colours.
Of course then they could issue an extra half goal for the best somersault or acrobatic movement through the air, and a quarter goal for a vertical landing.
Any Manager who manages to slit his nuts, on landing on goal, should be deducted one half a goal, as scowling may frighten the youngsters in the crowd.

It'll be interesting to say the least.

Perhaps referring to a stat, shots on target or possession in the opponents half or something, that would prevent one team defending deep for 90 mins. The team showing the most endeavour to win, should win the game imo.

However, having a shootout first before ET is a good idea, it means again an underdog in a Final won't shut up shop for ET wanting a shootout, as is often the case.

Seriously though, leave it as it is. . . pens are exciting, swift and decisive.

I wonder if Blatter would be whinging about this if Bayern had won on pens ....? <whistle>

Of course not. He can't handle that an English team has won the thing.

I can't really think of a better way than penalties. I love the way Blatter says that penalties should go without suggesting any possible replacements though.

Like everyone Piskie, he's sick of the wrong team whoever it is winning a lottery. I know I am, a seasons/tournaments hard work should not be decided by 5 spot kicks, its just plain wrong imo.
