I see that paragon of football fact The Metro is now saying that Madrid have given Liverpool the green light to re-sign Xabi Alonso for approx. £3m. Now, I have to admit that I would have him back in a heartbeat. However, am I letting my heart rule my head?

Alonso is now 31. He never was the fastest player on the pitch. So a spend of let's say £3m would run contrary to our club policy. But just think of the midfield options that we could have with Gerrard, Alonso, Lucas and Alberto all being avilable and interchangeable!

    What do you think?

I read that he'll be a free signing in January, don't know if that's correct.

I don't have any concern over his age as he was always very good at reading the game and being in the correct position, technically he is stiil brilliant that is clear if you have seen any Real Madrid games last season.

Adding a quality experienced player for a low fee or even free? I don't see the negative.

I am not sure if he's still that good, but with his proven experience in the premiership, worth trying.<ok>

Yes, just yes. Alonso doesn't need speed, so long as his stamina is still there. His passing ability and shooting, though, is something that won't so easily fade with age. Think he could easily do two or three more years perhaps.

Ideal scenario is we sign him on a rolling one year basis, although we'd have to accept he'll want Gerrard/Suarez wages of 100k minimum

For 3 million the chance to sign an international player of the highest calibre who has proven his ability at every stage of football he has ever played, who also loves the club?

How could this ever be a question. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I love you Xabi. Please come home.

The metro? that almost certainly puts the rumour in the total jarg category then.

I watched Madrid's game at the weekend & the commentators were saying how much they'd missed Alonso since he'd been out injured, & how he was widely regarded as being very important to their side. So I'd be surprised if he was allowed to go during this season.

Now that Gerrard is getting a bit 'leggy' do you not think that he just does the 'Alonso' role now anyway? As surely you couldn't play the pair of them in tandem as deep lying centre mids at the expense of Lucas?

He'd be a great signing for any Premier League side. Pirlo has shown that you can stay at the top level for a long time in that kind of role but even if you only got a season out of him he'd be worth it.

Yes he does and playing the pair of them without Lucas would be a risk but all 3 would be an option.

We need another experienced midfield option.

Can't see BR fancying this because it would demote his marquee signing last season, one Joe "Epic" Allen, to never start. Henderson can't be dropped, Lucas shouldn't be dropped and Gerrard wont be dropped. That means Alonso would either be benched or rotate with one of Henderson, Lucas or Gerrard. That means £15m Allen would not get a game, especially when we consider we don't have Europa this year.

yes it's 3 mil for 6 months but it also secures him for us, there'll be more than just us in for him when he's on a free next summer and he may want to move to French or Italian league. Just depends how much he wants to come home to Liverpool....

We know that Alonso actually does love our club. If Rodgers views his skills in the same way that many of us do then, provided the price does not get silly, I can well see it coming off.

    Yes yes and yes again.

Not just for his abilities on the pitch but also for what the kids can learn from him off the pitch as well.

  19. I'd pay up to about £8m for him now! Class player that will be able to perform at the same level in his mid to late 30's
