Being reported in some papers that Alonso wants to come back to the Premier League. He is still only 31 so has a couple of good years in him yet.

If its true he would be a good buy to link up with Gerrard again and supply the killer balls to the front men.

It would also take the pressure off the likes of Henderson/Shelvey who could develop more slowly instead of being expected to be competing with the best in the prem with little experience.

And before Gerrez says it FFS <doh>

wish it was true, would love Alonso back, only way i see it happening is if we had Cl football and i think we are at least a couple of seasons off trying to achieving that, think the Alonso boat has sailed sadly.

we have other areas to worry about first, mainly up front.

not sure on his wages as well, would they not be an issue for the owners.

if as said many times he really wants to come back, maybe he will take a pay cut, but i doubt it sadly.

Then we'll buy Mikel for £18 mill <laugh>

I'd have Alonso back any day of the week.

Not for me, you need legs and energy in the EPL. Would rather we look elsewhere and give our youth a chance

Great player but at 31 is he worth a large transfer fee?

We should look for a younger player.

I think John Hendry will say some thing along these lines:

    He is to old.

I would welcome him. But I think his other roles are more important to improve. Attacking midfielder, striker/forward or two, left back, defensive midfielder. That should be where the bulk of the cash goes.

We've got younger prospects for midfield already though. Having Alonso would give the likes of Allen and Hendo a master to learn from. Not that I think for a minute it'll happen but I'd have his craft and vision even if he was 34 or 35. It's not like his game has ever been based on pace or mobility is it. A bit like Molby, you just give him the ball and let the other younger players create the movement and space around him. Hamann used to do it without ever breaking sweat as well.

It's the transfer fee that would put me off, if he was available at the right price then I'd love him back and for the reasons you mentioned.

    1. alonso would be out of contract so a free.

    2. shelvey is a numpty.. i think he and gerrard are impossible to play together due to work rate issues. I would rather see us sell him and ge tone year out of alonso any day.

    3. alonso can't get any slower, its purely a question of can he cover 12-14km like he used to. kuyt legs went so has his?

Loved his first stint in the shirt but, I am put off by the bit where he say's "If I'm no longer able to offer the same standard on the pitch then I'd leave RM" - If he isn't able to offer that level, what's the point in taking him back?

No need to sell Shelvey he's just very inexperienced and has been asked to play a variety of positions some of which don't suit him at all. I agree though that at the moment he needs to be gaining experience away from the first team a bit more often.

I'm not sure the comparrison between Alonso and Kuyt is right though. Dirk's put an incredible amount of effort and tireless running into his career so is bound to suffer the effects more as he gets older. Alonso has never been about that.

There is a major difference between Reals level at the moment than ours though.

Didn't know his contract was up, he may well be a very good signing if he was free.
