It's something that football fans are continually discussing. Who would get in their clubs all time 11. Would players from past seasons be able to compete in today's game? Who would get into your alltime11?
All time 11 for what - Chelsea? As I didn't get to see the 50's or 70's heroes first hand mine would all be recent players; coupled with the success we've had in that time. I'd go for Cech Petrescu Terry Desailly Cole Makalele Essien Lampard Zola Drogba Robben
Even though he may not yet have a legacy, there is no way in my eyes that Robben should be in over Mata.
Similarly to 100 years, never saw 50s and 70s. 4-3-3 Cech Clarke Desailly JT Cole Makelele Lampard Di Matteo Zola JFH Drogba Mine changes every time i do one we've been blessed with some amazing players. Spencer personally was a childhood hero for me but he was nowhere near the 3 mentioned in terms of ability.
I will have to think about this as over 40 years of players for me to choose from, but one that springs to mind has to be Peter 'The Cat' Bonetti , he managed to keep over 200 clean sheets. One of my personal favourite players was Ian Hutchinson, arms like whirlwinds. (and the most gorgeous legs, well I was only a teenager at the time )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AzZm7DA4_o[/VIDEO] A great memory bit off topic, sorry but wanted to share this great throw in on such an important game
1 Cech 2 Harris 3 Cole 5 Terry 4 Desailly 6 Makelele 7 Lampard 8 Zola 9 Greaves 10 Osgood 11 Bluntstone
Now this is a bucket of worms, you could pick 3 all time teams and get all 3 right !!!!! However here are the players who should get in every team. Alan Hudson, Charlie Cook, Zola, Dessaille, Osgood, Drogba, Makelele, De Matteo, and Terry. Lampard would be in, except Alan Hudson was better.
Surely you lot should have chopper Harris in!! When I was a kid my dad had 3 chopper Harris garden gnomes..
In my 53rd year as a Blue I've got to spend some time on this! I will be back when I have given it a fair and honest consideration!
Chopper Harris is a legend, but not so much for his brilliance as his ruthlessness. He wouldn't last more than 30 seconds in todays' game without at least a yellow, and most of his tackles would be a straight red !!!! Think of John Terry on speed, with a kamikaze attitude to survival, and that was Chopper !!!!
CP--I dont know if you remember Stan Crowther, but he could have given Chopper a good run for his money in the "getting sent off first stakes!"
One of the problems of completing a best ever XI is when you've been watching them as long as I have, you have had so many heroes its hard not to put them in the team! My first hero was Jimmy Greaves--soon followed by Peter Bonetti. I'd have to include Frank Blunstone and Bobby Tambling. Then there's Chopper and Charlie Cooke! Alan Hudson was up there too! I couldn't possibly leave out Ossie or Ian Hutchinson. Kerry Dixon deserves a place. Peter Houseman? Webbie(only Blue to have been on the teamsheet in EVERY position). Drogs, Lamps ,JT--the 3 Amigo's!!! Marcel Desailly, Petr Cech! Sorry, but naming an XI for me is impossible!
You're not wrong we have had some cracking players alright, never saw Jimmy Greaves in blue, I really arrived in London in the Hudson, Cooke Bonnetti era. That midfield used to run as smooth as silk, with elegance bordering on arrogance. Mickey Droy was another huge lump of a man. The other thing of course is that the Kings Road really fired up on weekends !!!!!!!!!
Without wishing to forget the legends of the past, I can't see how any Chelsea 11 could leave out Terry, Lampard or Drogba. The 70's team had style but won very little ultimately.
