I had Steve Brady, leader of Hull City Council at my school today taking part in a political forum (a remake of BBC Question Time). One of the audience questions was about young people staying in Hull/the economist article etc. and Godfrey Bloom made a good point that we should be encouraging private business to invest in the city instead of relying on the central government. To build on this I asked Brady why the council had not allowed Hull City Football Club to take over the KC Stadium which would hopefully bring new investment to the Walton Street area. His response was as follows: The council financed the stadium initially because it didn't want to be in a situation where an owner could lock down the stadium as had been in other places in the past. He then went on to say that the Allams had never actually made a bid for the KC and that if they chose to do so he would be happy to consider it. He said that when he has spoken to Assem he has liked him as a person and he would be happy to meet about things such as extending the stadium. Despite these words I got the feeling that the reason the Allams had not made a bid was because they had been informally told that any bid would be rejected, but who really knows what is true and what isn't?
Is Brady aware that phone lines go both ways?? He has a duty to try and bring enterprise/trade into the City but happily sits back and does nowt.
You a pupil there or staff? It's unclear who is 'speaking' in the highlighted part, though I presume it to be your analysis, as you include it in the paragraph paraphrasing Brady's response. However, if this is true, why hasn't Allam made a proper approach?
Perhaps, but if you were looking for a joint venture and having a discussion to see if the other party was interested in the principle of the concept, it'd be a bit silly making offers as there's plenty of discussion to be had first. In any event, the fact a wealthy person was talking of a potential £100 Million + development in an area in desperate need, I'd want my voice in the council to leave no stone unturned to weigh the options, not gallop of to the press with half arsed bollocks showing their own ignorance. Failing that, I'd expect my same voice in the middle, to tell us what their alternative plan is to regenerate the area.
The truth cannot be told or even hinted at. One day it will come out and some will laugh, some will cringe, most will understand and just about everyone will be saddened.
Various finance options were offered, but despite it being a concept, the lack of firm plans and clear figures seemed to be a stumbling block, as well as some poor communication skills and baggage on both parts.
No offence taken, it is pretty unclear But yeah he, as with all politicians, seemed to be very economical with the truth. He was also incredibly uninspiring in general and seemed incapable of properly using the microphone, so his mutterings were on the whole unintelligible
Possibly the informal contacts made it clear that there would be the need for substantial investment from the Allams & not just through borrowings (as for example how the Glasers bought Manchester United burdening them with huge debts rather than the owners) I doubt even the Allams would actually want to risk their own money on such a risky venture, or perhaps they were hoping for millions in grants for a joint venture which the council does not have.
Oh my god if he was like that then imagine him and Allam together, no sense from either of them. No wonder they didn't get anywhere, confusion all round.
It is a pity he wasn't asked why he thinks AA has come out in the media saying the reason he is having to consider changing the name of the club to Hull Tigers, because he cannot buy the freehold of the stadium, as he needs to raise money in other ways. What has been said by HCC to AA for him to make this statement?
You can bid for something if its up for sale. You can ask to buy my house but im not interested in selling. If theres a for sale board in the garden then come in have a look around and make a bid. Why arent the council advertising the fact they want to do a deal with someone anyone to create jobs and wealth for the City.
