https://www.hullcitytigers.com/end-of-an-era-as-john-davies-leaves-tigers-trust-role/ John had the misfortune to be signed around the same time as Antony Norman, also a fine Welsh goalkeeper. Normo had an exceptional injury-free record as well as many seasons of great performances as City stormed up the leagues in the early to mid 80s. John was there in the background before injuries curtailed his playing career, and the club helped him out with a role which he has kept and developed ever since. He's seen it all at City and could tell a few tales, but has always remained affable, humble, honest and approachable. In short - a top chap.who has given great service to City and who deserves a decent send off and our gratitude.
Well said City man , met him a few times over the years and he his one of football's true gentlemen . as you have said , only Tony Norman prevented him from making more appearances for City .
Remember , I think , that John Davies debut game . Blackpool player manager was Alan Ball . Blackpool had been leading one nil , think that big Billy W could have leveled it but certain that Keith Edwards got the winner from a direct free kick in front of South stand . Seem to recall Alan Ball was not happy with his team in seconds after we scored .
Whitehurst and Edward's scored in that game. Had a row with the police in the Well as they had moved the Blackpool fans there as they were getting a bit of harassment and tried to stop our group going for our half time pint in the social club as it meant walking through them. Much mention of human rights, freedom and sarcastic promises that the 8 of us would not set about and bully the 100 or so of them before reason prevailed and we got our pints.
1980-81 A vital but futile win in our bid to avoid the drop Att. 5,315. Boothy, Garreth Roberts, King Keith, BB McLaren, Bunter Marwood, Big Billy(sub), Sir Les in the Adidas trefoil kit that day, Receiver called in a year later, as the rugby offered Sunday drinking , hollow victories and cheap thrills.
Im sure he was brought to City at a similar time to Norman, by Welsh manager Mike Smith? It looked like Smith wanted to surround himself by Welsh people! Or have I totally made that up? fantastic servant to the club as you say.
