As I've put on another thread, why are the club considering signing players when we currently have no permanent Manager in place ? Pemberton may leave (assuming he doesn't get the job) when a proper Manager is appointed so why are we appearing to be making yet another pigs ear of things ? What if the Manager doesn't like/rate the players that are signed just before he's appointed etc etc ?
Answer: He is stuck with them. Crazy situation and not one that will help the recruitment of a new manager especially a Pearson or the likes of.
It concerns me we are moving away from the manager having the say on who gets signed, to a situation where the board, Ashton and Lansdown decide what players we sign.
I know it's a model that other clubs use, but I don't see how it can work unless the Manager and those around him see eye to eye over absolutely everything......Personally I think it dilutes the Managers position
In case you haven't realised we are in dire need of players. Any manager who knows anything about football will know our situation. We need players! Desperately! It doesn't matter if we sign someone days before a new manager arrives as it isn't his club/job/responsibility yet. First and foremost we need to get players in, yes a manager is important but we got 3 points without one on Saturday. Besides, whoever comes in won't exactly mind us signing players like Lafferty, a striker that was part of a promotion winning team last season.
If you were a player, how keen would you to join a club with no Manager in place ? You could be told absolute rubbish when you signed, and then find that the person who brought you in leaves the club when the new Manager comes along.
To be fair, we were mostly underwhelmed when Matt Smith came - Leeds and Fulham fans didn't rate him, but he fitted in very well. Same with Jon Stead - and even Cotts. The opposite can be said for Hunt and El Abd who both came highly rated by the clubs they left. Although perhaps we haven't seen enough of El Abd yet to make an accurate judgement?
I watched Brentford vs Burnley and was impressed by Joey Barton (never thought I would say that) and looking at their team I saw many other things positive. There were 3 players for Burnley who could have been at Ashton Gate. Tom Heaton (left), Joey Barton (on a free?) and Andre Gray (ran away) and I ask myself, other than Heaton, what could have been if we had gone about our business in a more professional way and not made excuses as to why not? Like a soap opera.
all the ingredients have been there just that the southwesterlies carry them away to the rest of the UK!
The trouble with Heaton was we put him on a 12 month contract because he was second choice at Cardiff. One of those deals that could of been thank god it's only a 12 month deal or the way round that we saw. He was IMO one of the good ones from that season, shame we didn't take the gamble on a longer deal.
Hear, hear. Just because we do not have a manager right this second does not mean that we do not those 3 or 4 battle hardened championship proven players to get is out of the mess. This is an absolute must....
Leaving it to Cotterill didn't really work out did it.. any manager will come in and assess the existing squad, having just 16 squad players would hinder a decent appointment. We need them in as soon as...
