This great footballer of the 1950's has just died at 88 years after a heart attack. One superb footballer that kids of my age group who had a TV were privileged to see. I was also fortunate to see him live at Wembley in 1963 playing for the Rest of the World v England to celebrate the FA Centenary. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1963_England_v_Rest_of_the_World_football_match Look at the team sheets. WOW! Muy gracias.
my late mother in law-a true and proud madrelano, often spoke of meeting him in the sixties and by all accounts he was a gentleman with time for all,a true great, rip alfredo.
Wings, you said about di Stefano, exactly what has been said in the past year about Tom Finney and Eusebio - that they always had time for other people and that they played the wonderful game of football in the right way. Big John Atyeo was the same as were so many others. I know that perhaps we all look at our younger days through rose-tinted spectacles but will the modern era players with their Chelsea tractors, Dubai apartments and £1 million monthly salaries, be so fondly remembered when the grim reaper calls them?
Slightly before my time but from an era where the word legend actually meant more than just being on £200k a week and being on Sky adverts and in Hello magazine. Take note Mr Beckham. RIP Alfredo
Football was everything to everybody in his days and the money was totally inconsequential because the love of the beautiful game ruled the roost. RIP my friend.
