Despite Real Betis being relegated at end of the last La Liga season, Alfred N'Diaye had a successful loan spell with the Spanish club in the second half of 2013/14, as he emerged as one of the few bright spots in a difficult campaign for the Andalusian club.

Their relegation to the Segunda Division has not deterred Betis from attempting to make N'Diaye's loan deal permanent with reports emerging from Spain suggesting that they have agreed a deal of around £1.2m with Sunderland for the Senegalese midfielder.

N'Diaye did make himself something of a crowd favourite at the Stadium of Light after signing from Turkish side Bursaspor but soon found himself sent out on loan to Eskisehirspor as new head coach Paolo Di Canio looked to build a new team. After Gus Poyet took over from the disastrous reign of Di Canio, there was hope that N'Diaye would still have a future at the club but that does not look to be the case, with the midfielder not featuring in the Uruguayan's plans.

Although Betis and Sunderland are believed to have agreed terms, the player's £20,000 per week wages are still a sticking point in negotiations with the Spanish club currently offering the player in the region of £12,000 per week and they will also need to convince N'Diaye to drop down into the Spanish second division.

Would of liked to have seen him given a chance, never mind

Good news for me, from a wages & fee point of view.

I thought the lad was a character, and had character, but he was limited.

He used to frighten me when he was turning in midfield and his passing wouldn't have impressed Poyet.

So another whopping loss! 5 million down to £1.5 million in 18 months.

    Take a bow Martin O'neil.

We must be the worst club transfer wise in the premier league if not the world. Our club is being run terribly.

the problem with our club is every manager seems to suffering due to the prvious one's mismanagement. keane, brunce and mon all handed out big contracts to mediocre players and every manager after them suffers. we need a real change in how we manage contracts as players seem to be on **** loads of cash for very little effort

I think this is right ^.

Maybe this is what`s changing and why we haven`t dived in head first into transfers. At least I hope it`s the reason.

Maybe we`re actually going to get value for a change.

Think it was closer to around £3.2m mate

Admit though still making a loss and its crap

Would of liked to have seen him stay though

Problem is mate we change managers too often, im only 20 and can recognise that

Poyet needs to stay in now for a few years, get a team together thats playing well under his philosophy

Agreed but he still needs backing and there`s been little evidence of that up to now. The next 2 weeks will tell it`s own story.

We need to sign Poyet on a 10 year contract and either sink or swim with him.

We've had so many quick fixes I feel like a heroin addict watching Sunderland.

I still reckon di Canio was right to be appalled when he walked into the club, it needs sorting out from top to bottom.

So we signed him for 4.1m and have accepted 1.2m and he's made 16 appearences which means he's cost us just over 180k per game before wages are added in and loan fees taken. Think there's a good chance that we'll be out of pocket yet again. We're Sunderland, we hemorrhage money.

This has always been spot on, but where we are right now is with the right manager and as close to a clean slate as we can get.

Almost all of the dead wood high earners are gone, I'd say only JOS is left but as Poyet seems to like him, so be it.

No excuses now, Gus really can make his mark. No previous regime will be accountable.

All clubs do mate but we're in the Champions League!

I can't believe a businessman like Short has presided over so many poor buys and contracts.

However, we have players like Mannone and Vergini who help to restore the balance.

We need to tip the balance in our favour now, that's all.

This, I assume, is what we're now attempting to do now and why there's caution being shown.

People talk about Newcastle but they've had their share of Xisco's.

    MoN & Short this one.
Half the problems are Pre Ellis Chairman fella. It's just a knock on effect of bad spending through two chairman.

    No

It's got to stop. Scocco should never have been signed.

SUNDERLAND will hold discussions over Alfred N’Diaye’s future next week, with the midfielder reluctant to return to Real Betis.

N’Diaye looked to be heading towards the Sunderland exit door after reports emerged in Spain that the Black Cats were in advanced talks with Betis over the sale of the Senegal international.

Betis were thought to be close to agreeing a fee of around £1.5million – plus add-ons – for N’Diaye, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the club, who finished bottom of Spain’s Primera Division.

But the 24-year-old’s agent and brother, Bakary N’Diaye, insists he is yet to hear from either party over a potential sale and is due to hold a meeting with Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne and sporting director Lee Congerton next week.

Betis’s hopes of agreeing a contract with N’Diaye may be scuppered though, with the powerful midfielder preferring to prove himself in the Premier League than drop down to the Spanish Segunda Division.

“I have read all the speculation, but I have not actually heard anything and, as far as I am concerned, he is staying at Sunderland,” Bakary N’Diaye told the Echo.

“I will meet with the club next week, with Margaret Byrne and Lee Congerton, to have a discussion.

“At the moment, he is with the team and is working hard in pre-season.

“Real Betis really loved him and he had a great relationship with the coach.

“He was happy over there with the city and the club, but now he is back with Sunderland.

“Betis want him and I know they keep talking with Sunderland about him.

“But he does not want to play in the Spanish Second Division.

“He would prefer to play in the Premier League with Sunderland.

“That is his main goal and he is focusing on that every day.”

N’Diaye was a surprise departure last summer after just six months on Wearside, when former head coach Paolo Di Canio sanctioned his loan move to Turkish side Eskisehirspor.

Gus Poyet then had the option of recalling N’Diaye in the January transfer window, but tellingly gave the go-ahead to a subsequent loan move to Betis, as he was not thought to be part of the Uruguayan’s long-term plans.

But, after almost a fortnight of pre-season training back at the Academy of Light, N’Diaye – a £3.8million signing 18 months ago – is determined to make the most of his second opportunity at the Stadium of Light.

“Sunderland are interested in Alfred,” added Bakary N’Diaye.

“He was given a programme to follow during the summer which he did and the feedback from the club has been good.

“He loves the club and wants to do his best to be in the team.”
