    Matt Law for the Daily Telegraph;

"Swansea City want to spend a chunk of the £28million fee they have received from Manchester City for Wilfried Bony on Stuttgart midfielder Alexandru Maxim.
The Welsh club are prepared to wait until the summer to try to find a new striker to replace Bony and will instead prioritise an attacking midfielder and two full-backs this month.
Swansea manager Garry Monk believes he can get by with Bafetimbi Gomis and on-loan Nelson Oliveira, and can push Gylfi Sigurdsson forwards as a makeshift forward if either of the pair pick up injuries or suspensions.
With almost £30m burning a hole in their pocket, Swansea fear that any strikers they might be able to sign this month will prove over-priced and could become expensive flops.
Instead, Monk wants to concentrate on long-term targets who the club have done their homework on and believe can be a long-term success.

Romania international Maxim scored nine goals and contributed 11 assists in the Bundesliga last season, which sparked interest from Liverpool.
The 24-year-old has made 10 appearances for Stuttgart so far this season, scoring just one goal but Swansea still believe he could add a creative spark to their side.
Having his made his international debut in 2012, Maxim has won 19 caps for Romania, scoring two goals, and is valued at around £5m.
Other than chasing Maxim, Swansea are in talks to sign Tottenham right-back Kyle Naughton who they have been quoted a £3m fee for by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, and are long-term admirers of Aston Villa’s Matt Lowton. Naughton is also wanted by Leicester City, but prefers a move to the Liberty Stadium.
Other than a right-back, the Swans want a new left-back, with Norwich City’s Martin Olsson high on their list of targets.
Swansea had been prepared to sell Gomis this month, but would now rather keep the Frenchman until the end of the season, following the departure of Bony.
A bid of around £9m could still tempt the Jenkins into cashing in, but Swansea would rather keep hold of Gomis than make a move for Newcastle United’s Papiss Cisse, who has been offered to the club.
Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is a player Swansea have done their homework on, but the £15m-rated 20-year-old is not thought to be available this month and could attract bigger clubs in the summer."

I've not seen Maxim play so can't comment on his abilities but let's just imagine we have been tracking him for a while and sign him....what would our squad then look like...

    Senior Players

    ...................... 1st XI ........................................................................................... 2nd XI ................................
    ---------------- Fabianski ------------------- ............................... ------------------------- Tremmel -------------------------
    -------- Fernandez ---- Ash --------------- ............................... ----------------- Bartley ------- Amat --------------------
    Rangel ------------------------------ Taylor ............................... Jazz --------------------------------------------- Tiendalli
    ------------ Leon ------ Ki ------------------- ............................... --------------- Shelvey ------- ??????? ----------------
    -------------------------------------------------- ............................... ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Dyer ---------- Siggy ----------- Montero ................................ Barrow -------------- Maxim --------------- Routledge
    ----------------- Gomis ---------------------- ................................ ----------------------- ??????? ----------------------------

Utility players; 1) ??????? (Defender....maybe Jazz if new FBs are signed), 2) Grimes? (Midfielder), 3) Emnes (Forward)
    = 25 senior players

    Youth Players / Reserves

    ----------------- Cornell ---------------------
    ---------- Tancock --- ?????? ------------
    Shepherd ------------------------ Kingsley
    ------------ Fulton --- Sheehan -----------
    -------------------------------------------------
    Bray ------------- King ------------- Gorre
    ----------------- Loveridge -----------------

    So (1)Maxim would be useful but we would still need (possibly over 2 summers) imo;

    at the least
    (2)GK - Tremmel replacement
    (3)RB - Rangel replacement
(4)LB - if Tiendalli can't force his way in front of Taylor in the next few months replace him I say
(5)DM - some beef in there, ideally with enough class to relegate Leon to the bench
    (6)CF - Bony replacement

Also, in an ideal world (mine at least)
(7)Shelvey replacement - Carroll will do nicely
    (8) A left footed winger - the problem is who would he replace? Dyer? Routledge? Emnes?
    (9, 10, 11, 12) 3 or 4 youngsters with serious potential - GK, CB, WG and ST.

then you've got the possibility of
    (13)What if Taylor leaves?
    (14)What if Gomis leaves?
(15 & 16)Should we expect bids for Ki and Montero
    this summer?

So yes, Maxim sounds great but there are bigger priorities in the squad for me.

Lets bid £3m, when they say he is valued at £5m, just tell them we will give them £3m, and another £1.5m if we win the Premier League in the next 10 years.

I am sure they will be happy with that.

Have to say all fullbacks being talked about are not an improvement on what we have. Surely if we are going to pay good money for a player we should be looking to improve our team or at the very least be on a par with the player in his position.

At the time of posting this thread yesterday there was a 7% chance of us signing this player, today this has risen to 28%.
    Maybe,just maybe.

Maxim is technically gifted but do we need another attacking midfield player? (£4 mn offered for an £8 mn player ... seriously?)
Have Monk and Huw not yet realised we are screaming out for a central defensive midfield player and a left back. (If Jazz is prepared to stay at full back I'm more than happy with him and Rangel seeing us through this season and maybe next. Taylor is not up to scratch and has no competition to push him on.)
We will struggle if they think Scottish league youngsters and development players are the immediate answer.

As i just said on another thread and i know this doesnt make him a bad player, although I have never rated him. Relegated at Blackburn left and relegated at next club Norwich. He is not one for me and no improvement on what we have.

I'm afraid we're trying to get players on the cheap who have already shown in PL they are no better than what we have. Olson better than Taylor, Rangel or Richards - I don't think so and what of Kingsley? If we were prepared to bring in Farnadez for £4 mn more than we got for Chico and the offers now being made, it looks like £4 mn is our level for back four players.
For that we won't get better but we might get younger. Fine if we do not expect them to be automatic first choice players on arrival.
And I'm concerned we don't have the Brittons, Tates Williams', Monks, Rangels & Dyers who have Swansea in their blood to take over when these leave the club.

This guy is class but i see him as a summer transfer target. If I had a choice id look to sign jordy clasie as I think he's the perfect Leon replacement. I also think we missed a trick when we choose not to pursue Luc Castaignos!
